-
 |

Pictured: Committeeman Doug Tomson, young members of our community helping to promote allergy awareness, Mayor Frank DelCore, and Township Clerk Pamela Borek
|
Food allergies affect approximately 15 million Americans, including 6 million children.
- The prevalence of food allergies appears to be increasing among children under the age of 18, which is 2 students in every classroom.
- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 1997 and 2011, the prevalence of food allergies rose 50 percent. Eight foods account for 90 percent of all food allergy reactions, they are: peanuts, tree nuts, milk, egg, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish.
- A food allergy is an immune system response to a food the body mistakenly believes is harmful and when a person with a food allergy eats the food, his or her immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals, including histamine, that trigger a cascade of symptoms that can affect the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal tract, the skin, and/or the cardiovascular system.
- There is no cure for food allergies, strict avoidance is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction.
- Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that comes on quickly and has the potential to become life-threatening.
- Managing a food allergy on a daily basis involves constant vigilance and trace amounts of an allergen can trigger an allergic reaction in some individuals.

Hillsborough Recognized as 2016 Playful City USA Community
257 communities exhibiting Playability to be recognized as part of 2016 Playful City USA Program
"Hillsborough was honored last week with a 2016 Playful City USA designation for the first time," announced Committeeman Doug Tomson, Liaison to Parks and Recreation.
Hillsborough is one of five municipalities in New Jersey and one of 257 communities nationwide to earn this recognition. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the National recognition program honors cities and towns across the country for making their cities more playable. This past year, the basketball courts at Ann Van Middlesworth Park were resurfaced and a new dog park opened.
Hillsborough Township maintains numerous parks and recreation facilities and numerous recreation programs and leagues. Also, recreational programming is continuously reviewed to offer the best and most popular sports and programs based on local and national youth sports trends. These resources, programs, and leagues provide countless passive and active recreation opportunities, and nearly 3,500 children participate in township-sponsored recreational programming annually.

Somerville Mayor Brian Gallagher and Somerset County Freeholder Director Patricia Walsh and members of the Somerville Elks Lodge #1068 will be among the speakers to kick off the festival with AT&T volunteers at 12 noon. The program will include a re-enactment of the historic photograph of Marines raising the American Flag on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. The Somerville Elks will also conduct a special "Flag Day" flag ceremony, normally performed within its lodge, to commemorate the birth of the American Flag and remind attendees of the importance of honoring the American Flag as a symbol of our freedoms.
John Dorell, a resident of Somerset County and founder of Operation Jersey Cares, a nonprofit dedicated to helping our troops overseas and those who have returned home, will also be honored with the Flag Day Festival "Defender of Freedom" Award, presented by AT&T.

You Can Help 'Curb Hunger' in Somerset County
Even though Somerset County is known for its affluence, there still are children and adults here who go to bed hungry. Freeholder Director Patricia Walsh is urging residents to help change that by supporting the 22nd annual Curbing Hunger Month food drive.
State Sen. Kip Bateman, members of the Freeholder Board and food bank supporters joined Freeholder Walsh at the Food Bank Network of Somerset County to launch this year's program, which will help boost food supplies there and at the Franklin Township Food Bank and other local food pantries serving Somerset County residents.
"Despite Somerset County's reputation as one of the wealthiest counties in the Northeast, hunger in our communities is very real," said Freeholder Walsh. "The number of food bank clients has steadily increased since the recession. Food banks serve both short-term clients - for instance those who are temporarily out of work - and individuals who need assistance on a long-term basis, such as seniors and food stamp recipients."
