Dr. Laurene Wolf Selected As One Of Somerset County's "Outstanding Women"

At the April 26th Township Committee Meeting, the Mayor and Township Committee of the Township of Hillsborough joined the Somerset County Commission on the Status of Women in saluting Dr. Laurene Wolf, an orthodontist in Hillsborough, for being honored with the "Medicine" award at the Annual Outstanding Women in Somerset County awards dinner.

Dr. Wolf, after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine as valedictorian of her class, opened her practice in Hillsborough in 1998.  Dr. Wolf also serves as an orthodontic advisor to the Somerset component of the Seattle Study Club.

In 2008, Dr. Wolf established Giving Smiles Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports local communities.  The Giving Smiles essay contest encourages local children to write about community service they were personally involved in with donations being made to charities of the winner's choice.  The Giving Smiles Foundation also awarded scholarships for high school students and donated money to the local charity Steps Together.

The Mayor and Township Committee would like to thank Dr. Laurene Wolf for her many contributions to the community.

"Steered Straight" is Coming to Hillsborough on Tuesday, May 10
th!

In New Jersey and across America, we are dealing with a social crisis unlike any we've ever experienced. We are more likely to lose our loved ones to an accidental drug overdose than to a car accident. It is a growing epidemic across the country and it is affecting new demographics in devastating ways.  All communities are being affected, and suburban and rural communities are being affected in greater numbers than ever before.  Prescription drug overdoses and overdose death have dramatically increased, as has heroin.  Alcohol and marijuana use by youth has increased and with the contradicting messaging that youth get about these social issues, it is important that parents are educated about the truth. We must get beyond the stigma that it can't happen in our families and communities.   Come hear Michael DeLeon speak and participate in a question and answer discussion.
Parents will:
  • Learn about the latest drug trends.
  • Learn about the signs and symptoms to watch for.
  • Be better equipped to speak with their children.
  • Be given tips and advice as to how to better prevent drug and alcohol use from affecting their children.

Avoid Floodwaters - Turn Around Don't Drown!

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States. It can happen anywhere and at any time, causing devastation quickly.

In March 2016, many residents in southeastern Texas and parts of Louisiana evacuated their homes and communities to escape extensive flooding. However, some homeowners remained in their homes and were trapped by floodwaters.

The America's PrepareAthon! How to Prepare for a Flood guide recommends the following steps to protect yourself and your family against being trapped by floodwaters:
  • Listen to local weather broadcasts and emergency alerts and, if authorities advise, evacuate before flooding starts.
  • However, if floodwaters cover the roadways around you, do not evacuate through floodwaters. Seek higher elevation instead.
  • If you see floodwater on roads, walkways, bridges, or elsewhere, do not attempt to cross. The depth of the water is not always obvious. Water may be covering a washed out roadbed or other hazards that may prove harmful.
Moving water has tremendous power. Six inches of moving water has the potential to knock an adult off their feet, and as little as one foot of water can sweep a vehicle off the road. Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown!

Floodwaters can also contain hazardous materials, including rocks, mud, oil, gasoline, downed power lines, and even sewage. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.

For more information on floodwater hazards, visit the National Weather Service's Turn Around Don't DrownŽ program by clicking here..
