NJ Forest Fire Service Warns of Danger in Using Drones Near Wildfires
As New Jersey heads into peak forest fire season in April, the State Forest Fire Service is warning owners of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or drones, to keep their equipment away from active wildfire areas so they do not interfere with firefighting efforts.
The Department of Environmental Protection's State Forest Fire Service regularly uses planes and helicopters to fight and observe fires, and requires areas near blazes be kept clear so firefighters can maneuver their equipment close to the fire to protect structures and contain the spread of the blaze. Operation of drones over active wildfires, as well as over national and state parks, is prohibited by both federal and state law at all times.

Securing Your Financial Documents
Many Americans experience the challenge of rebuilding their lives after a disaster or other emergency. In these stressful circumstances, having access to personal financial, insurance, medical, and other records is crucial for starting the process of recovery quickly and efficiently.
Taking the time now to collect and secure these critical records will give you peace of mind. In the event of an emergency, it will also ensure that you have the documentation needed to start the recovery process without delay.
The Emergency Financial First Aid Kit (EFFAK) can help you financially prepare if a disaster or other emergency strikes your community. The EFFAK contains four important steps to financial preparedness: -
Assemble your important documents and contacts;
-
Review your insurance policies and financial paperwork to be sure that they are still accurate and current;
-
Store paper and electronic copies of all files in safe locations; and
-
Revisit and update your EFFAK on a regular schedule. (Updates are especially important when certain changes in your life occur, like a change in marital status, birth of a child, and opening or closing accounts.)
April is Financial Literacy Month. This month is a great opportunity to review and update your EFFAK. You can find more financial preparedness resources online.

Earth Week Message from NJ DEP Commissioner
(16/P24) TRENTON - It is hard to believe that 46 years have passed since the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970. That event marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement. It also was the launch of what has to be the most successful grass-roots movement in history. Never before, and never since, has one day so galvanized the public and moved governments at every level, to action.
Earth Day also marks the 46th anniversary of the establishment of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Created by Governor William T. Cahill, New Jersey was just the third state in the country to form a department whose sole mission was to protect, restore, and preserve the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land on which we live.
In the nearly five decades since, under both Republican and Democratic leadership, New Jersey has made enormous progress in undoing the environmental injuries of our state's past and creating an environment in which our state and our people can thrive. And we have done so while also preserving the prosperity of our state.
