Township Committee Recognizes April as Autism Awareness Month

The Hillsborough Township Committee recognized the following organizations and individuals for their contributions towards enhancing awareness and funding research for autism.  Recognized were Governor Chris Christie, Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno, Autism New Jersey, Autism Speaks, Somerset County Therapeutic Recreation, Bella Vida Coaching Services, Hillsborough Board of Education's Special Services Department, Hillsborough Department of Parks & Recreation, Hillsborough Police Department, Hillsborough Rescue Squad, Hillsborough Rotary Club, Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Companies No.1, No.2, and No.3, Neshanic Fire Company, Office of Emergency Management (OEM), Organization for Autism Research (OAR), Somerset County Sheriff's Office, Somerset County Special Olympics, Hair Plus Hillsborough, Royce Brook Golf Club, Hillsborough Country Club, Neshanic Valley Golf Club, Southern Wine and Spirits, and Bentley's Fine Jewelers.

Hillsborough Township Recognizes April as National Donate Life Month

Mayor Frank DelCore and the Township Committee presented a proclamation recognizing April as National Donate Life Month.  The transplantation of organs and tissues is a miracle of modern medicine and enables surgeons to save thousands of lives every year.

Hillsborough Joes Hold the NFL Pros to a Tie

The game may have ended in a tie, but the Hillsborough Joes vs. NFL Pros scored big last week in their efforts for raising funds.  The event, which was co-sponsored by the Hillsborough-Millstone Municipal Alliance, BOROSafe, Life Skills and Dreams for Kids, hosted nearly 750 guests and players to a night of basketball fun.  In addition to the NFL Pro Team, the other teams were the Hillsborough Hi-Tops, Hillsborough High School Students and Middle School Students, the Hillsborough Police Department, the Hillsborough Township Committee joined by Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli and other Township Officials. Two Hometown Heroes were recognized at the event; retired Police Chief Paul Kaminsky and Municipal Alliance and Life Skills Coordinator Minda Maggio were recognized for years of dedication to the Hillsborough Community.

Free, Secure Paper-Shredding Event Saturday, April 23rd 
9am - 1pm at the Somerset County Public Works Facility 410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough

Operation Secure Shred, sponsored by the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders, will begin hosting the 2016 document shredding events throughout the county.  The first one for the season will be held on Saturday, April 23rd from 9am until 1pm, rain or shine, at the Somerset County Public Works Garage, located at 410 Roycefield Road in Hillsborough. 
 
The program, Operation Secure Shred began in 2007 and is offered throughout the county in various locations from April until October.  The intention of the program is to offer residents a safe and easy way to dispose of bulk personal information.   In collaboration with the Somerset County Consumer Protection Office and the County's Records Management Office, documents will be commercially shredded safely, privately and properly by trained, licensed and bonded document-destruction specialists.

The Annual Salute to Veterans Breakfast to be Held Saturday, May 28th, followed by the Memorial Day Parade and Garden of Honor Ceremony
Registration Available Online or by Calling the Recreation Department

"All Hillsborough Veterans, Spouses and Widows are invited to be our guests at the Annual Salute to Veterans Breakfast to be held the morning of Saturday, May 28th, here at the Peter J. Biondi Municipal Complex" announced Mayor Frank DelCore, at Tuesday's Township Committee Meeting.
 
Each year more than 200 Veterans, spouses and widows gather in the multipurpose room for a breakfast prior to the start of the Annual Memorial Day Parade.   
"It is an honor to have the opportunity to recognize our Veterans each year during the Memorial Day ceremonies," added Mayor DelCore.

Interested in Marching in the Memorial Day Parade?
The 2016 Memorial Day Parade and Garden of Honor Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 28th. If your organization is interested in marching in the parade, click here to fill out a registration form. Please note that only non-profit or youth based organizations are permitted to march in the parade.


Recreation Summer Camp

The 2016 Summer Recreation Camps will be held June 20 to August 12 at various locations around town. Camps are open to children ages 5 (who have finished Kindergarten) to 14, and we will have a fun, half-day Tiny Camp program for children 4 and 5 (who have not finished Kindergarten). Recreation camps are fun, affordable, and close to home. Full camp information and registration is available on the recreation website.

Public Works 2016 Clean Up Programs

2016 Annual Clean Up Program
The Public Works Department is now handing out passes for the 2016 Annual Clean Up ProgramThe purpose of clean-up day is to allow residents the opportunity to dispose of old furniture/toys/rugs/appliances/bicycles/yard clean-up brush/hot water tanks/old furnaces, etc.

Grass & leaf drop off is accepted one Friday each month at the Auten Road dump site (opposite of the Auten Road school next to the railroad tracks).

Hillsborough UNICO Accepting Applications for Miss Unico 2016


Applicants must fit the following criteria:
  • The young woman must be at least 50% Italian
  • Must be a resident of Hillsborough, NJ
  • Must be continuing her education
  • Must be between the ages of 18 to 25 years old
  • Must be comfortable speaking in public
  • Must learn the Motto and purpose of UNICO
  • Must be able to: Attend John Basilone Parade in Raritan, Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016
Applications must be received no later than June 4, 2016

Composting 101
Monday, April 18, 2016 from 7 to 8:30 PM at the Hillsborough Library 

This presentation on basic composting will teach you how easy it is to make a positive impact on the soil in your garden. Learn how to turn your garden waste and kitchen scraps into a rich, organic soil conditioner and fertilizer. The benefits of composting will be covered and how compost works to improve soil, methods of composting, dos and don'ts. and solving composting problems. After the program Master Gardeners will be available to answer your gardening questions.

Applications are Being Accepted for Youth Leadership Somerset
Deadline is May 13

Youth Leadership Somerset, a leadership development program for Somerset County youth entering grades 9-12, is accepting applications for the 2016/2017 program year, which runs September through May. Classes are held one Saturday per month for approximately four to six hours. Class size is limited; the application deadline is Friday, May 13.

"Youth Leadership Somerset empowers young people to become tomorrow's leaders," said Freeholder Peter S. Palmer, liaison to the youth leadership program.  "Participants will be introduced to community leaders and challenged to explore current issues that impact their communities. They also will have the opportunity to develop critical thinking, team building and communication skills."

Forum Focuses on the Safety of Children with Developmental Disabilities

The Somerset County Commission on Child Abuse & Missing Children (CCAMC) will hold its annual spring forum for professionals who serve children and families on Friday, April 29. This year's program, which focuses on the safety of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Somerville Elks Lodge 1068, located at 375 Union Ave.

"The safety of children is our highest priority," said Freeholder Brian D. Levine, human services liaison and co-chair of the CCAMC.  "As an advocate for youth, the Commission provides educational programs, raises public awareness and helps to develop community-based collaborations that focus on the prevention of child abuse and neglect."

Healthy Kids Day - April 30


During summer months, it's easy for kids to find themselves inactive. The Y's Healthy Kids Day is designed to combat that and keep kids active all summer long by helping them find the "Wow factor" inside themselves. This year we're hosting a kids mini-triathlon for kids ages 3 to 12. The event is free and open to all in the community.

Rotary Club of Hillsborough to Host Annual 
Charity Golf Classic

The Rotary Club of Hillsborough announced today that it is hosting its annual Rotary Golf Classic on Friday, May 6, beginning with an 11 AM registration, at the Royce Brook Golf Club in Hillsborough.  A shotgun start will commence at 1 PM.

Over the years, the Rotary Golf Classic has raised funds to support a wide variety of local community organizations and other Rotary Foundation philanthropic efforts.  This year's beneficiaries are GiGi's Playhouse, a one-of-a-kind achievement center for individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and the community; and the Hillsborough Rotary Foundation, a non-profit philanthropic organization supporting the Hillsborough community. Among the community events to be supported this year by the Rotary Foundation funds raised at the Golf Classic is the August 20 Family Fun Day, a special day at the annual Rotary Fair reserved for special needs children and their families.

Every year the Clothing Drive helps the Woods Road School and Home Association fund projects for the school. Funds received are based on the
weight of the items donated.

Acceptable items in well-tied plastic bags:
* Wearable & Usable Clothing (men, women and children)
* Shoes (All shoes must be bagged separately-not mixed with clothes)
* Belts, Handbags, Backpacks, Hats, Gloves, Scarves
* Pillows, Blankets, Quilts, Sheets, curtains, Table Linens
* Stuffed Animals
* Bikes
* Hard Toys (put into cardboard boxes)

Unacceptable items:
They do not accept over-sized toys, strollers, high chairs, car seats, cribs, play centers, bouncers,
walkers, swings, books, VCR tapes, or CD/DVDs.

St. Joseph's Parish Performs Godspell 
to Celebrate 150th Anniversary

The St. Joseph Theatre Group will be performing Godspell for the enjoyment of the community at 7:30 pm on Friday, May 13, 7:30 pm on Saturday, May 14 and 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 15 in the church located at 34 Yorktown Road, Hillsborough.  As part of the parish's 150 Year Celebration, the performances will have no admission charge or need tickets.  Free will offerings will be accepted.

Producer and Musical Director is Frank Viola, Director is Matt Viola and Choreographer is Beth Viola, parishioners of St. Joseph's Parish.  The part of Jesus will be played by Doug McLaughlin.

Based on the Gospel according to Matthew, Godspell features a comedic troupe of eccentric players who team up with Jesus to teach his lessons in a new age through parables, games and tomfoolery. Godspell ran in theatres off Broadway from 1971 to 1976 and on Broadway from 1976 to 1977.  It features the international hit "Day by Day," as well as an eclectic blend of songs ranging from pop to vaudeville, as Jesus' life is played out onstage.
