Essay Contest to Address Underage Drinking Prevention
Open to High School Juniors & Seniors

Every day 5,400 young people under 16 have their first drink of alcohol.  In an effort to raise awareness about the risks and prevent underage drinking-related problems, the Safe Communities Coalition of Somerset County has announced its second annual Underage Drinking Prevention Essay Contest, being offered in collaboration with Somerset County Department of Human Services, local Municipal Alliance Commissions and EmPoWER Somerset.

"Somerset County proclaims every April as Alcohol Awareness Month," said Freeholder Brian D. Levine, human services liaison. "County government is glad to join with our community partners to provide useful information about alcohol abuse through this essay contest.  We have confidence in our youth, as well as our community partners, to continue to make Somerset County the safe and educated community that we all know it to be."

All public and private Somerset County high schools are invited to participate in this year's essay contest, which is open to juniors and seniors. Each participating school will have the opportunity to select its top three student essays and submit them to the countywide essay contest by March 14. One countywide winner, to be announced April 8, will receive a $500 scholarship and public recognition from the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

Tax Counselors Ready to Help Out This Tax Season

Somerset County Freeholder Brian D. Levine has announced that the county Office of Volunteer Services and AARP have again teamed up this year to provide free tax-counseling assistance to residents in preparing their federal and New Jersey income tax returns.

"As a CPA, I know the importance of providing quality tax preparation service to our residents," said Freeholder Levine, human services liaison. "This program helped more than 2,000 people last year. I encourage all eligible residents to take advantage of this free service."

The volunteer program, Tax-Aide, is designed to help area residents prepare their tax returns.  The program places specific emphasis on assisting seniors, residents with disabilities, and lower income residents, but is open to everybody.

Body Worn Cameras to be Implemented by Somerset County Sheriff's Office

Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano has announced the implementation of Body Worn Cameras for his officers at the Somerset County Sheriff's Office.

The Body Worn Cameras were purchased in 2015 with funds from a federal Drug Enforcement Agency grant. The Sheriff's Office has been working in close collaboration with Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano to develop standard operating procedures for the use of the Body Worn Cameras in accordance with the New Jersey Attorney General's Directive 2015 -1.

The cameras will be worn by officers and supervisors trained in the operation and use of the devices in accordance with the Attorney General's directive.  "The Sheriff's Office will utilize the body-worn video/audio recording technology to its fullest extent for the day-to-day law enforcement functions his officers perform as dictated by the Attorney General's guidelines," Sheriff Provenzano said.
