4th Annual Festival Celebrates Indian Heritage

Committeeman Carl Suraci recently attended the 4th annual Indian Heritage Festival, held at Auten Road Intermediate School.

The festival, hosted by Sanatan Vidyalay, is held each year to celebrate Indian Heritage and includes skits on puranic stories and dances representing the festival of India. Participants enjoyed the delicious food and connecting with the community.

Sanatan Vidylay is a Sunday school in Hillborough that teaches the understanding of the Sanatan Dharma to children ages five years and above. Children meet in a friendly environment to learn the teachings of the Indian heritage and health benefits through yoga.

74 Acres Added to Sourland Mountain Preserve

A Sept. 23 closing was held on 74 acres of land being deeded to the Somerset County Open Space program by land owner John Higgins. The acquisition was completed through a partnership with New Jersey Conservation Foundation and Hillsborough Township.

New Jersey Conservation Foundation secured an option agreement to purchase a total of 78 acres from Mr. Higgins, which was transferred to the County. Hillsborough Township has committed to contributing $500,000 toward the county's preservation of the land. The county anticipates closing on the remaining four acres later in the year, which will include the demolition of two dilapidated structures.

The property will remain largely in its natural state. The county and New Jersey Conservation Foundation will work together to develop a management plan that will outline planning and management activities most appropriate for the health and public enjoyment of the land.

Reminder From the Building Department
Time is Running Out

The Hillsborough Township Building Department has recently sent reminder notices to property owners and their contractors that have not paid for permit applications which were approved prior to March 2015.

While the response has been very encouraging, there still remain a significant number of approved permits that remain unpaid.

It is important to note that a permit is not considered "issued" until payment is received.  Any work performed prior to payment of the permit is considered work performed without a permit and may result in a violation being issued beginning January 2016.   To avoid the additional expense and delays associated with a possible violation, we urge you to take care of any unpaid permit applications.

If the work for which the permit was applied for is not going to be performed, a letter stating such is required to void the application and stop the issuance of a violation.  If you have any questions please give the Hillsborough Township Building Department a call (908-369-4313; ext. 7164, 7165, 7166 or 7204) during normal business hours.
