Township Recognizes September as Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month

Mayor Doug Tomson and the Township Committee presented proclamations at the S
eptember 21st Township Committee to raise awareness for two disorders that affect many people in our community.

Childhood cancer is not just one disease but is made up of a dozen types and countless subtypes of cancer; the types of cancers that affect children are most often very different from those that affect adults.  46 children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer each day.

Sickle Cell Disease is the most common genetic disorder in the United States; and, an estimated 100,000 people live with Sickle Cell Disease in the United States.  Up to 80% are African-American but many different races are affected and millions are affected globally.

Township Recognizes September as Suicide Prevention Month

Mayor Doug Tomson and the Township Committee presented a proclamation last week recognizing September 2015 as Suicide Awareness Month.  Because suicide is one of the most disruptive and tragic events a family and community can experience and annually, more than 40,000 lives are lost, residents are encouraged to educate themselves of the warning signs of suicide and understand that suicide is preventable and there are resources available for help

Water Supply Drought Watch Issued For Three New Jersey Regions
Residents Asked To Voluntarily Conserve Water

Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin today issued a drought watch for New Jersey's Northeast, Central, and Coastal North water supply regions, urging residents in the affected areas to voluntarily conserve water and for the rest of the state to practice wise water use due to continued dry weather and above-average temperatures.
The drought watch is prompted by continued rainfall deficits that have decreased reservoir, ground water and streamflow levels in the three regions.

The purpose of the watch is to raise public awareness, formally alert all water suppliers in the region of the situation, and to seek voluntary cooperation to preserve existing supplies in the affected regions, with water demand still high.

The three affected drought regions include all or parts of 12 counties, including Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset and Union.
