Fireworks Safety

Fireworks are often used to mark special events and holidays. However, they are not safe in the hands of consumers. Fireworks cause thousands of burns and eye injuries each year. People can enjoy fireworks safely if they follow a few simple safety tips:

  • If you want to see fireworks, go to a public show put on by experts.

  • Do not use consumer fireworks.

  • Keep a close eye on children at events where fireworks are used.

Fireworks Facts:
  • Fireworks cause an average of almost 20,000 reported fires per year.

  • In 2013, sparklers caused 41% of fireworks injuries.

  • NFPA is opposed to consumer use of fireworks. This includes sparklers and firecrackers. Even sparklers burn hot enough to cause third-degree burns.

Fact #3:  If serving an underage person alcohol results in injury, the adult may be charged with Endangering the Welfare of Children, and may be subject to a fine of up to $15,000 and up to 5 years in state prison (N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4).

Heat Wave Safety Checklist

In recent years, excessive heat has caused more deaths than all other weather events, including floods. A heat wave is a prolonged period of excessive heat, generally 10 degrees or more above average, often combined with excessive humidity.

To prepare for a heat wave:

  • Listen to local weather forecasts and stay aware of upcoming temperature changes.

  • Be aware of both the temperature and the heat index. The heat index is the temperature the body feels when the effects of heat and humidity are combined. Exposure to direct sunlight can increase the heat index by as much as 15° F.

  • Discuss heat safety precautions with members of your household. Have a plan for wherever you spend time- home, work and school-and prepare for the possibility of power outages.

  • Check the contents of your emergency disaster kit (bug out bag) in case a power outage occurs.

  • Know those in your neighborhood who are elderly, young, sick or overweight. They are more likely to become victims of excessive heat and may need help.

  • If you do not have air conditioning, choose places you could go to for relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day (schools, libraries, theaters, malls).

  • Be aware that people living in urban areas may be at greater risk from the effects of a prolonged heat wave than are people living in rural areas.

  • Get trained in First Aid to learn how to treat heat-related emergencies.

  • Ensure that your animals' needs for water and shade are met.
