UPDATE:  Off Track Wagering Facility

As Mayor Tomson announced Tuesday evening at the June 9th Hillsborough Township Committee meeting, the New Jersey Racing Commission advised Hillsborough Township on Tuesday afternoon, June 9th that the application filed by the NJ Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, Inc, regarding the initial license for the planned off-track waging facility in Hillsborough New Jersey is now complete.

If there are no legal issues identified or new documents that need to be submitted that would render the application incomplete, N.J.S.A 5:5-132 requires the NJ Racing Commission to schedule a public hearing within 45 days in Hillsborough.  As such, the New Jersey Racing Commission has scheduled a Public Hearing for Wednesday, July 22nd starting at 7pm at the Hillsborough High School Auditorium.

Due to the fact that the application is still under review by the NJ Racing Commission, information such as the application is not available until the NJ Racing Commission has completed its review.

The appropriate time to address any and all questions would be during the public hearing on July 22nd.  We look forward to the public participating in this process.

Flag Day Festival to be held in Somerville on Saturday, June 13th

The American flag has been a symbol of our freedom and aspirations for more than two centuries. In downtown Somerville on June 13th (14th rain date) it will be celebrated with a large Flag Day Festival. The event will feature live music, interactive exhibits, contests with prizes, historic military vehicles, cool modern SWAT vehicles, and re-enactors. There will also be games, entertainment, and arts and crafts for children of all ages, as well as food and snack vendors. The event will be held on the courthouse lawn between 11:30am and 4pm.
The event is being organized by members of the Somerville Elks, YMCA, Boy Scouts, John Basilone Parade Committee, American Legion and others. All proceeds from event sponsors and advertisers will go to fund programs through the Somerville Elks Charitable Trust benefitting local veterans. The goal of the event is to expand appreciation of our flag, educate students and adults to its history and significance, and instill good will and a sense of patriotism to all that attend.

Part of the entertainment for the day will be a performance contest called the American Flag Day Super-Patriot. The contest is being run through the School Of Rock Somerville and will bring many of New Jersey's most talented musical performers together to demonstrate patriotism while showcasing their talents. The crowd can cheer on the performers; only one will be given the title of American Flag Day Super-Patriot, and will lead the crowd in Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA.

Grilling Safety

There's nothing like outdoor grilling. It's one of the most popular ways to cook food. But, a grill placed too close to anything that can burn is a fire hazard. They can be very hot, causing burn injuries.

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.

  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

  • Never leave your grill unattended.

RideConnect Program Provides Subsidized Rides For Senior Citizens and Residents With Special Needs

Hillsborough residents who are 65 years and older, or 18 years and older with special needs, are eligible for subsidized rides through the RideConnect program from RideWise.  This service uses screened, professional drivers to provide door-to-door transportation services.  After residents enroll as members in the program and establish a prepaid transportation account, they are able to schedule appointments for rides. Travel destinations can be anywhere within Somerset County or up to five miles outside of the county borders.  Program participants pay an annual membership fee of $40.  As rides are taken, $3.00 per mile is deducted from their prepaid transportation account.

Thanks to a recent grant from United Way of Northern NJ, RideWise is now able to increase their transportation subsidy for those who meet low income eligibility guidelines.  Eligible program participants are offered a reduced membership rate and per mile charge.

RideConnect is an on-demand mobility option that is helpful for seniors who want to age in place or disabled residents who "age out" of other transportation programs.  In 2013, 1,100 trips were provided for medical, employment, daily errands and social/recreational needs.

RideConnect began in 2012 as a pilot program named Senior RideWise.  The program served the residents of northern Somerset County.  In 2013 the program expanded to serve all residents of Somerset County.  Recently the program name was changed from Senior RideWise to RideConnect.  RideWise believes that "RideConnect" better reflects that rides are not only for senior residents, but also for individuals with special needs.

RideWise was formed in 1992 to provide and promote sustainable travel solutions that improve mobility, reduce traffic congestion and decrease carbon emissions. Learn more by visiting the agency's website at ridewise.org or contact us at (908) 704-1011. Follow @RideWise on Twitter or Like RideWise TMA on Facebook.
