Flag Day Festival to be held in Somerville on Saturday, June 13th

The American flag has been a symbol of our freedom and aspirations for more than two centuries. In downtown Somerville on June 13th (14th rain date) it will be celebrated with a large Flag Day Festival. The event will feature live music, interactive exhibits, contests with prizes, historic military vehicles, cool modern SWAT vehicles, and re-enactors. There will also be games, entertainment, and arts and crafts for children of all ages, as well as food and snack vendors. The event will be held on the courthouse lawn between 11:30am and 4pm.
The event is being organized by members of the Somerville Elks, YMCA, Boy Scouts, John Basilone Parade Committee, American Legion and others. All proceeds from event sponsors and advertisers will go to fund programs through the Somerville Elks Charitable Trust benefitting local veterans. The goal of the event is to expand appreciation of our flag, educate students and adults to its history and significance, and instill good will and a sense of patriotism to all that attend.

Part of the entertainment for the day will be a performance contest called the American Flag Day Super-Patriot. The contest is being run through the School Of Rock Somerville and will bring many of New Jersey's most talented musical performers together to demonstrate patriotism while showcasing their talents. The crowd can cheer on the performers; only one will be given the title of American Flag Day Super-Patriot, and will lead the crowd in Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA.

Somerset County SCOOT Buses

A Travel Alternative For Hillsborough Residents

Hillsborough residents have an alternative, other than driving a car, when considering how to travel to neighboring towns. Somerset County operates three separate SCOOT shuttles to nearby communities:  SCOOT Peak, SCOOT R1 and SCOOT R2.

SCOOT R1 and SCOOT R2 provide transportation to and from Hillsborough, Manville, Bound Brook, Bridgewater, and Somerville.  Along the route, the bus stops at the Hillsborough Shop-Rite, Hillsborough Promenade, Walmart, Somerset Patriots Ballpark, the Somerville rail station, the Bound Brook rail station and the Bridgewater Commons Mall.

SCOOT Peak provides transportation to and from Hillsborough, Manville, Somerville, Bridgewater and Bedminster - terminating at the Far Hills train station.

All bus rides are $2 per trip.  The buses operate on a "flag down the bus" basis. The bus can be flagged down anywhere along the route as long as the area is safe for the driver to pull over.  Exiting the bus works the same way; the driver will pull over to allow passengers to disembark as long as it is safe to do so.

Current bus schedules are available on the RideWise website at www.ridewise.org or you can download our free mobile app, RBus Somerset to obtain current schedule information.  The time points listed on the schedules are the approximate times the buses will get to that stop.
The RBus Somerset app eliminates the need for paper schedules and lets riders know the approximate time of the next bus directly from a smart phone or other mobile device.  The app also notifies users of schedule changes or delays by sending alerts.

To download this free app from the Google Play Store or iTunes simply type RideWise SC into the search box.  Look for the RideWise icon (blue letters/white box) and install.

RideWise was formed in 1992 to provide and promote sustainable travel solutions that improve mobility, reduce traffic congestion and decrease carbon emissions. Learn more by visiting the agency's website at ridewise.org or contact us at (908) 704-1011.  Follow @RideWise on Twitter or Like RideWise TMA on Facebook.

Spring Rabies Clinics

The Hillsborough Health Department strongly urges all Township residents to have their dogs and cats immunized against rabies. Rabies in wildlife, especially raccoons, continues to be a public health concern in New Jersey as well as Hillsborough Township. The best defense against rabies is prompt vaccination of domestic animals.

Township residents may bring their pets to be immunized against rabies at one of the following clinics in Bridgewater:

Saturday - June 6

Location: Green Knoll Firehouse, North Bridge Street and Foothill Road

Dogs only 9 AM to 10 AM

Cats only 10 AM to 11 AM

Tuesday - June 9

Location: Finderne Firehouse, 672 East Main Street

Dogs only 6 PM to 7 PM

Cats only 7 PM to 8 PM

It is extremely important that all dogs brought to the clinic be securely leashed and accompanied by an adult. All cats must be leashed or contained in a secure box or carrier. Current license information will speed processing but is not necessary for a vaccination. All rabies vaccinations will be provided to pets free of charge.

Being Prepared if the Power Goes Out

Sudden power outages can be frustrating and troublesome, especially when they last a long time. If a power outage is 2 hours or less, you need not be concerned about losing your perishable foods. For prolonged power outages, though, there are steps you can take keep all members of your household as safe and comfortable as possible.

Some basic things every household should have on hand in case the power goes out include:

  • Flashlights
  • Extra batteries
  • Battery powered radio or television
  • Hard-wired telephone
  • Charged cell phone
  • Ice chest to store medications

If you have a well with an electric pump, you should have enough bottled water to last a couple of days.  It's also a good idea to post the emergency number for your electric utility so it's handy in case you need to call.  And be sure to stay well away from any downed electric lines!
