Hillsborough Adopts 2015 Municipal Budget

Maintains Budget Under Cap Levy for 5th Consecutive Year - Saves Taxpayers over $140,000

Hillsborough Township adopted the 2015 municipal budget at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting, which as discussed when introduced, came in under the 2% levy cap for the 5th consecutive year. Maintaining a budget under the cap saves Hillsborough taxpayers over $140,000 for 2015.

"As indicated when we introduced the 2015 budget, our fiscally responsible budget has come in below the 2% tax levy, which has been our practice since the 2011 introduction of the 2% levy cap and this measure saves our Hillsborough taxpayers over $140,000," stated Mayor Doug Tomson during his opening remarks regarding the budget.

The $28,182,103 municipal budget results in a municipal tax rate change of $0.003 per $100 of assessed property value. The tax increase is approximately $10 on a home assessed at $350,000.

Veterans Way - Officially Dedicated

Under the picture perfect skies of Saturday, May 23rd, following the Annual Memorial Day Parade the Hillsborough Township Committee along with the 2015 Parade Grand Marshal Leo J. Hornsby officially cut the ribbon on Veterans Way.  Last fall the roadway was dedicated as Veterans Way and the final work including a brick and granite monument were completed in advance of the Memorial Day Commemoration Program.

"I am of the opinion we can never do enough to recognize and honor our Veterans; those men and women who selflessly dedicated their lives to serve our Nation," stated Mayor Doug Tomson prior to the Ribbon Cutting.

"Let this monument memorialize our gratitude and our appreciation to our Veterans and their many sacrifices," continued Mayor Tomson.

Avolios Honored at Township Business Event

The Hillsborough Township's Economic & Business Development Commission (EBDC) held its 2015 Spring Networking event on Monday evening, May 4th, at the Polish Falcons of America Club at 140 Falcon Road.  Close to 120 persons attended the event at which the EBDC presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to the Avolio Family, owners of United Rent-All, on Route 206.  The Avolios, their daughter Kristen, son Michael, and two granddaughters were all at the event to accept the honor.

EBDC member Stephen Bearse (Regional Sales VP, Valley National Bank) presented the award, and spoke about how Michael and Marie Avolio first opened the doors to United Rent-All in 1971 in the Finderne section of Bridgewater.  Marie continued commuting to Nutley High School where she was a teacher, while Michael operated the store.  As the business grew and they needed more space, Michael designed and built the current location on Route 206, where they have been ever since, close to 30 years.

Ken Hesthag (VP, Bank of America Merrill Lynch), EBDC Chairman, opened the event by welcoming everyone, introducing the current EBDC members, and providing updates on recent EBDC initiatives, which were a direct result of the Business Satisfaction Survey they released to Township businesses last summer.   The initiative updates included enhancements to the Township Hillsborough Business Association (HBA) website, creation of a new Quarterly HBA Newsletter, and a "Welcome To Hillsborough" presentation designed to attract new businesses.  A pdf of the presentation is available on the HBA page on the Township website.

Mike Dudzinski, (Owner, Audio Café on Route 206), EBDC Vice-Chair, then navigated those in attendance through the rest of the evening, beginning with introductions of Mayor Doug Tomson, Township Committeemen Frank DelCore and Greg Burchette, and senior Township personnel, who attended the event.

The presentation to the Avolio Family was next, followed by the event's guest speakers, who included Don Newman, Director of Small Business Advocacy, New Jersey Business Action Center and Monika Athwal, Business Development Officer, New Jersey Economic Development Authority.  Mr. Newman and Miss Athwal presented 'An Overview of NJ's Economic Development Resources', covering areas such as financing and business incentives, and what state resources are available to retain, attract and grow New Jersey businesses.

But the hi-lite of the evening was definitely the Lifetime Achievement Award to the Avolios, which drew a standing ovation for the long-time Hillsborough business owners.  According to the Avolios - 'it's been a wonderful journey as many of their customers have become friends and they've loved being a valued member of the community.  They look forward with their next generations to continue servicing and serving Hillsborough'.

The EBDC is already planning its next event, tentatively scheduled for late September/October.  For information on Hillsborough Township business related matters, you can contact Gene Strupinsky, Business Advocate, at gstrupinsky@hillsborough-nj.org.
