Township Committee Proclaims May 29th as Colonial Day

Deputy Mayor Greg Burchette presented a proclamation to the Auten Road Intermediate School proclaiming May 29th as Fifth Grade Colonial Day. This effort was the result of the teachers and students desire to celebrate Colonial Heritage. The day will consist of educational and creative activities representative of the Colonial Era.

Township Committee Honors Outstanding Women of the Year - Audrey Blumberg

The Hillsborough Township Committee honored Somerset County's Commission on the Status of Women's Woman of Year "Journalism/Media" Award recipient, Audrey Blumberg with a proclamation.

World War II Veteran to Serve as 2015 Grand Marshal

Army Veteran Leo Hornsby of Hillsborough to Lead Commemoration Ceremonies   

Deputy Mayor Greg Burchette announced that Hillsborough resident and World War II Army Veteran Leo Hornsby will lead Hillsborough's 2015 Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremonies 

on May 23rd.

 

Veteran Radio Engine Specialist / Aerial Engineer Hornsby enlisted in the Army at the age of 18 years old.  Upon the completion of his training, he was sent to the South Pacific.  Ultimately, Veteran Hornsby served 10 years active duty.  Upon his return home, he would marry, have three children and began working for Exxon Corporation.  In 1982 he retired from Exxon after 26 years of service.

 

"It's been said, everyone should have a goal," Veteran Hornsby quipped when discussing his involvement in the Commemoration Program.  "My goal is to be the 100 year old World War II Veteran, 9 years from now," stated Hornsby.

Shop Hillsborough Program Provides Residents over $30,000 in Rebates during First 7 Months

Fiscal Year for Program Closes with nearly 3,500 Registered Card Holders and 80 Hillsborough Businesses Participating   

The Shop Hillsborough Program, which was started last fall in the Township, has been the most successful launch for FinCredit, the management company of the program. Upon the April 30th fiscal year end, the company reported to the Township that over $30,000 in rebates have been accumulated which will translate to property tax credits or reward checks.

 

"This has been a very successful program for not only the businesses in the Township but also the card holders who are utilizing their cards to earn tax savings and reward checks," stated Deputy Mayor Greg Burchette during the announcement at the Township Committee meeting.

 

The Shop Hillsborough Program, introduced in September of 2014 with the mailing of Shop Hillsborough cards to all property addresses within the Township. The program encourages residents and those who work in Hillsborough to shop locally by rewarding them with property tax credits or reward checks when they shop or obtain services at any of the participating merchants of the program. Tax credits earned will be applied to the property tax bill, or in the case of a renter and those who shop in Hillsborough, a reward check will be issued.

Hillsborough ShopRite Unveils Partners in Caring Cheerios Box

The Hillsborough ShopRite unveiled the Partners in Caring Cheerios box from the 2014 campaign.  Each year all the ShopRite stores chain-wide participate in a program called the Partners in Caring campaign. In 2014, Village Super Market, Inc., the owner of 29 Shop Rite supermarkets raised almost $225,000 and the Hillsborough store raised approximately $13,000. Once the campaign is over, the top 40 stores have their two chairpersons featured as a part of a large group photo that is then featured on Cheerios boxes sold in stores.

The Annual Salute to Veterans Breakfast to be Held Saturday, May 23rd, followed by the Unveiling of the Monument on Veterans Way, the Memorial Day Parade and Garden of Honor Ceremony

Michael will provide parents and students with local trends and current information and will be available for any questions during a Q & A session.

Place: Hillsborough Municipal Building - Multipurpose Room

 

This FREE evening will include prizes and is open to all adults and kids ages 10 and up. This event is sponsored by Steered Straight Inc., the Governor's Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse and the Hillsborough/Millstone Municipal Alliance - Advocating Wellness through Addiction Resources and Education (A.W.A.R.E.).

Mayor's Wellness Campaign and Health Department Join Forces to Offer Free, 6-Week Workshop

'Take Control of Your Health' Weekly Workshop Begins May 28th

The Mayor's Wellness Campaign and the Hillsborough Health Department joined forces to present a 6-week workshop to address chronic illness.


"The Stanford Chronic Disease Self-Management Plan is a 6-week, one session per week, chronic disease workshop covering fitness, exercise, nutrition, managing symptoms, pain, fatigue, treatment decisions and developing health related action plans," stated Mayor Doug Tomson.  


This workshop is designed to help those dealing with chronic conditions such as arthritis, asthma, obesity, heart disease, COPD, diabetes, Hepatitis, osteoporosis, Lyme Disease, and other chronic conditions.  The series of 6 workshops will be held once per week on Thursdays, beginning May 28th, from 4:45pm to 7:15pm at the Hillsborough Municipal Building. The workshops will be facilitated by 2 peer leaders trained in the Stanford Model of Disease Management.  


Participants of the program have reported that they have experienced more energy, less pain, reduced fatigue and decreased depression. Additionally, they exercised more and had more confidence in discussing their health needs with their doctors more easily.  Ultimately, they took control of managing their own health.

2-5pm at the Municipal Complex   

RWJ-Somerset to Sponsor Blood Drive

Hillsborough Township will hold its second "Green Living and Wellness Fair" on Wednesday, June 17th from 2-5pm.

Participating local businesses will have informative presentations, displays and demonstrations to raise awareness of the many facets of living a healthy lifestyle, including making sound nutritional choices, making long-term life planning decisions, choosing a green lifestyle as well as many health screenings.  

Robert Wood Johnson - Somerset will also be conducting a Blood Drive in the Senior Activity Center.

Are You Hurricane Ready?

Being prepared is the key to safety in any emergency situation.  Below are some general guidelines and suggested supplies in the event of a weather emergency.


General Safety Precautions

  • Keep away from downed power lines

  • Use caution if using candles.  Do not leave unattended.

  • Do not enter flood waters

Preparing a "Go Kit", should you need to evacuate your home is also recommended.  Suggested items to include in a "Go Kit" are:

  • Prescription medications and glasses

  • Infant formula and diapers

  • Pet food and extra water for your pet

  • Cash or traveler's checks and change

  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container.

  • Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information from www.ready.gov.

  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person.

  • Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes.

  • Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper - When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.

  • Fire Extinguisher

  • Matches in a waterproof container

  • Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items

  • Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels

  • Paper and pencil

  • Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children

Manville- Hillsborough Elks to Host "A Pig Roast for Alex"

 
The Manville-Hillsborough Elks #2119 will host "A Pig Roast for Alex," a family-oriented barbeque and outdoor event at the Manville-Hillsborough Lodge on Sunday, May 17 from Noon to 5pm. The event, now in its 8th year, takes place on the grounds of the Lodge at 1500 Brooks Blvd in Hillsborough. The "Pig Roast for Alex" is an event named after it's first recipient and continues its legacy every year by helping a family with a special needs child.

Alexander James Monto this year's "Pig Roast for Alex" child. Now 15 months old, Alex's smile will simply melt your heart. His heart, however, was not formed correctly when he was born and he had some other medical problems on top of that. As a result, the medical bills have been astronomical.

Mayor Doug Tomson invites all Hillsborough Runners to participate in the 10th Annual Legal Runaround 5K Run, 3K Poker Walk and Kids Dashes to be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015.

 

"Once again, Hillsborough Township has been challenged to compete for the Healthiest Town Award at the Legal Runaround 5K Run / 3K Poker Walk, sponsored by the Somerset County Bar Foundation," announced Mayor Doug Tomson.    

 

The Somerset County Bar Foundation raises funds through the event to benefit local non-profit organizations and scholarships for county residents. March with the Library in the Hillsborough Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, May 23, 2015! 

Sponsored by the Hillsborough Library Advisory Board: March with the Library in Hillsborough's Memorial Day Parade on Saturday May 23rd, honoring our Veterans and enjoying Hillsborough Library community spirit at the same time! 

 

The 1.5 mile parade route begins at Auten Road and ends at the Municipal Complex, followed by a moving tribute to our Veterans in the Garden of Honor. Bring your strollers, scooters, flags and wear RED to show your support.

We will meet in front of Sal's Pizzeria, near the CVS at the corner of Triangle and Auten Roads at 9:30 a.m.The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. but we will begin to line up at 10:00. ALL ARE WELCOME! Please note that children under 17 MUST BE accompanied by an adult.

HHS Theatre Presents final Performance of this school year...

"Hillsborough Shorts"

HHS Theatre will perform "Hillsborough Shorts" at 7 PM on Friday, May 29, in the HHS auditorium.  It is an evening of student written and/or directed five, one-act plays.  Mr. BJ Solomon, Artistic Director, extends his creative teaching talents by coaching students who are interested in learning the various skills it takes to produce a play. Admission:  $15; reserved seating.  Tickets can be purchased on HHSTheatre.org or at the door.

 

Mr. Solomon and the HHS Theatre program were nominated for nine Rising Star Awards by Paper Mill Playhouse for their outstanding show "CATS." The awards ceremony will be held on June 2 at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ.

Once again volunteers are needed to assist with the Hillsborough Hop.

This year's race is Saturday, May 30, 2015.  Race start is again 8:00 a.m.

Over 100 volunteers are needed to help make the race happen.

2015 Hillsborough Hop Service Opportunities

Pre-Race: (to be decided, approximately 2 weeks prior to race)

Flyer distribution:  Walk race route and distribute flyers to houses along the race route. Prefer age 16+ for this task as it involves walking around unsupervised.  (10 Needed)

 

Pre-Race: (most likely Wednesday before the race, during the day, but this date is flexible)

Bag and T-Shirt Prep:  Stuff bags and organize shirts for Friday night distribution (10 Needed)

 

Night Before the Race: Friday, May 29, 2016 @ 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Race Number T-Shirt Pick-Up at YMCA:  Pass out shirts and assigned numbers to registered runners. (20 Needed)

 

Race Day: Saturday, May 30, 2015 (Race Begins @8:00 a.m.)

Pre-Race at YMCA :  We can find spots for just about anyone to help with pre-race activities including directing parkers, filling balloons, set up, clean up, general information etc. Pre- Race: 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. (10 + Needed)

 

Registration: Assist with passing out race numbers and shirts to registered runners.  Pre-Race - 6:00 .am. - 8:00 a.m. (20 Needed)

 

Course Directors:  Stand on course and direct runners as to which way to go.  Appropriate for age 16+ who can act unsupervised. During Race 7:15 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. (16 Needed)

 

Water Stop: Pass out water cups to runners at mile markers #1 or #2.  Great group opportunity.  Adults will need to be present. During Race 7:15 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. (2 stops - 6-8 each stop)

 

Finish Line :  We can find spots for just about anyone to help with race end activities including passing out food, helping with awards, set up, clean up, etc. Post Race: 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (10 + Needed)

is to serve trauma survivors in NJ with the assistance of Horses.

SRoL is currently the only program in NJ to earn the EAGALA Military Services Provider Certificate.

Most trauma survivors either do not want to or simply cannot "talk about it"...

3rd Annual Knights of Columbus Charity Golf Outing
The Knights of Columbus - Somerville Council #1432, Charity Golf Outing will take place on June 22, 2015 at the Heron Glenn Golf Course. All money raised will be used to support local charities in our area. In order to meet this goal we are asking for sponsorships from local businesses and individuals.

By giving to this event you'll be supporting the Raritan Pregnancy Aid Center in Raritan, NJ, and the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program in Somerville (SHIPS) as well as help the Knights of Columbus provide assistance to those in our communities. The Raritan Pregnancy Aid Center provides much needed assistance to unwed mothers in the local area while, SHIPS provides a network of food pantries that supply food staples to families of low income. Any remaining funds the Knights of Columbus will use for supplementing any assistance programs already in place. 

It is a 1 PM shotgun start with lunch, dinner, prizes, and loads of fun included.

Cost per golfer is $130, and  Please make all check payable to: Knights of Columbus - Council # 1432.

For a $150 donation, you can sponsor a hole.  "Golf Hole" sponsorship will entitle you to have your name highlighted at the Tee Box of the hole you are sponsoring.
