New FEMA Flood Maps for Somerset County Available for Review

Public Open House is Scheduled for Thursday, March 19, 2015 from 4-8 pm at the Somerset County Training Academy

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region II office released updates to the flood hazard maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), for Somerset County. The FIRMs identify areas that have flood risk in Somerset County. Insurance companies use FIRMs to determine flood insurance rates for buildings and their contents, and lenders utilize this information to determine flood insurance requirements. Somerset County residents and property owners are encouraged to learn more about their flood risk and the updates shown on the preliminary flood hazard maps by looking up their property's address in the "What's my BFE" tool at www.region2coastal.com.

"Somerset County will hold a public Flood Risk Open House on the updates at the Somerset County Training Facility, 402 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844 on Thursday, March 19th, 2015. Residents are invited to attend the Open House any time between the hours of 4PM and 8PM," stated Committeewoman Gloria McCauley, Liaison to Emergency Management.

No appointment is required. Using interactive flood hazard maps at this Open House, representatives from the State, Somerset County, and FEMA and their mapping partners, will be available to answer flood risk and insurance questions, and explain the preliminary flood hazard maps. Residents are encouraged to bring their elevation certificates and/or flood insurance policies to the event in order to get the best information about how their flood insurance may change as a result of the new preliminary flood maps.

Hillsborough Recreation Partners with Mayors Wellness Campaign for Second Annual Run Around the Park 5K - Sunday, April 19th at AVM Park

Partnership Enhances Promotion of a Healthy and Active Lifestyle

"The second annual Run Around the Park 5K hosted by the Hillsborough Parks and Recreation Department will take place on Sunday, April 19th at 9:30am at Ann Van Middlesworth Park and is in partnership with the Mayors Wellness Campaign", reminded Mayor Doug Tomson at Tuesday's Township Committee Meeting.

"This non-competitive, recreational run is held on trails and through fields of Ann Van Middlesworth Park and is fun for the whole family," commented Mayor Tomson.

The run benefits Hillsborough's parks and the Community Assistance Network (formerly known as the Hillsborough Food Pantry).

The event represents a fun way to enjoy Hillsborough's parks and participate in an active lifestyle.  The partnership with the Mayors Wellness Campaign will further the event's goals of encouraging healthy living.

"The Township's 2014 Sustainable Jersey Bronze Certification included recognition of the Mayors Wellness Campaign as part of the Building Healthier Communities Action; so it is a win-win," added Committeewoman Gloria McCauley, Liaison to the Sustainable Hillsborough Steering Committee

"This is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the scenic run through AVM while doing something healthy that the whole family can participate in together," concluded Mayor Tomson.
