2014 Marks a Year of Many "Firsts" for the Township
|
Mayor Doug Tomson presided over his last Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, December 22nd as his Mayoral term nears an end. Before getting to the general business of the meeting, the outgoing Mayor recapped the 2014 term as a year of 'many firsts' for the Township. "It has been my distinct honor to serve as the Mayor of Hillsborough Township for the year 2014," began the Mayor. Affectionately referring to the town in which he was born and raised, Tomson, one of the youngest Mayors of the Township, often shares many fond memories growing up in Hillsborough. Now, he can officially add serving as Mayor of the Town he loves to that list. "We have had yet another banner year here in the Township, some of the highlights included: increased communication and transparency with a redesigned Township website and launching the Honeywell Instant Alert Messaging System. We have continued to focus on our Senior Community by hosting the first Hillsborough Senior Olympics and enhancing the Senior Exercise program with the agreement with the YMCA. Hillsborough was the first municipality in Somerset County to be named a Purple Heart Community and with continued gratitude to our Veterans, the roadway entering the Municipal Complex has been renamed and dedicated Veterans Way. Our Police Department celebrated its 50th Anniversary and while concentrating on public safety the Township conducted its first active shooter response training exercise. In focusing on our business community and saving our residents valuable tax dollars; the Shop Hillsborough reward program was launched this fall and the Business Recognition program was instituted. In the area of recognition, the Township received the New Jersey Smart Workplace Platinum Award, was recognized for implementing a complete streets policy, the Hillsborough / Montgomery Shared Municipal Court was recognized twice this past year by the 13th Vicinage for the superior case management and we were ranked the 19th safest municipality in the state by SafeWise and 3rd safest mid-sized city by Value Penguin. This past year, our 19 parks went smoke free and joined the Somerset County Park System as smoke free facilities with the passage of an ordinance," reported Mayor Tomson.
