Hillsborough Township Achieves Sustainable Jersey® Bronze Re-Certification

Sustainable Jersey representatives announced earlier this month that Hillsborough Township has once again met the rigorous requirements to achieve Sustainable Jersey Bronze recertification.  Hillsborough Township is one of 125 towns out of 378 registered municipalities that have attained certification.  Sustainable Jersey's participating communities represent over half the state's municipalities and nearly 75 percent of its population.

"Hillsborough Township began sustainable initiatives in 2006.  Sustainability and planning has been ongoing with the focus being to plan for the future to ensure our community has balanced economic, environmental and social objectives, developed with public input," stated Committeewoman Gloria McCauley, Liaison to Sustainable Hillsborough Steering Committee.

"Thanks to the efforts of our Deputy Director of Planning / Zoning Officer, David Kois, who once again, spearheaded the submission along with the volunteers of the Sustainable Hillsborough Steering Committee and Employees from our Municipal Departments, we are extremely proud of this achievement," stated Mayor Doug Tomson.

Calling All Hillsborough Based Not-For-Profit Organizations: Annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday, December 5th @ 7PM

All not-for-profit Hillsborough based organizations are invited to participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting to be held on Friday, December 5th at 7pm by decorating a tree.  As in years past, trees will be provided by the Township for your not-for-profit organization to decorate in advance of the event.

The trees are approximately 5 to 6 feet tall and lights will also be provided.  Your tree can be themed for your organization or decorated with festive ornaments for the season.  These trees are later planted throughout the Township as part of the Community Forestry Program.  For more information or to register to participate in decorating a tree, please contact Hillsborough Township's Recreation Department at 908-369-4832.

Leaf Program Update:

The Township's Leaf Program is moving along smoothly and it is anticipated to be on schedule to finish the first round of leaf pick-ups by the end of next week. The second round of pick-ups will begin immediately.  Residents are urged to put your leaves out now if you are planning to take part in this program.

 Preparing Your Leaves

  • Please rake leaves in a pile between the sidewalk and the street curbing. Be sure your pile of leaves is no further than four feet back from the curb. The vacuum hose cannot reach the leaves if they are too far back.
  • Rake only leaves into piles. The vacuum cannot pick up other types of yard waste such as sticks, brush and garden refuse.
  • Combine your leaves into sizable piles. It slows the crews down to have to look for and handle multiple small leaf piles. The minimum size for one pile should be the equivalent of one yard waste bag.

You Can Help Us Out

  • Please do not rake leaves into the street as it is against the law! Leaves should never be raked into the street as they can be washed into the storm sewer and cause flooding for your neighborhood.
  • Do not pile leaves around mailboxes and signposts. Place the pile in an open area.

 Some Final Reminders

  • Despite all advanced preparation, adherence to these schedules depends on weather and equipment functioning properly. Equipment breakdowns and heavy rains can slow progress, and snowstorms late in the cycle can curtail the program.
  • We advise residents to not delay in leaf raking, as an early winter requires that equipment and crews be redirected to snow removal.
  • The Auten Road Dump Facility is open every Saturday from 7-3:00pm until December 20th if you desire to remove the leaves.

HHS Competition Cheer Heads To Florida

On Saturday, November 22, 2014, the Hillsborough High School Competition Cheerleading team headed down the Garden State Parkway to participate in the Northeast Regional UCA Cheerleading Championship at the Pine Belt arena in Toms River NJ. The team competed in the Small Varsity Division which consisted of 16 teams from New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. At the end of the competition and when the awards were handed out Hillsborough finished in 6th place and their score was high enough to earn them a return bid to attend the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships at ESPN World in Orlando Florida the weekend of February 6, 2015.

This is the fourth straight year the HHS Competition Cheerleading Team has earned a bid to attend the National Championships. Last year the team placed 12th Nationally in the Medium Varsity Division I the best any HHS Cheer Team has ever finished. This year the team will be competing in the Small Varsity Division I and hoping to come home with another amazing experience and National Title.
