The Purple Heart, the most recognized medal of the armed forces, is awarded to those serving in the armed forces that are injured or killed while serving in combat.  It was originally introduced by George Washington as the Badge of Military Merit in 1782.  It is the oldest military award given to U.S. military members.

A reminder from our Engineering Department on Easements:

It is to be noted that easements located on residential and commercial properties are the property owners' responsibility to maintain the surface area.  This includes swales, drainage ditches, streams, etc.  If these areas where the easements are located need attention due to down trees, silted, blocked or settled surfaces, the maintenance is handled by the private property owner.  The Township does not own the property.  The easement is there only to allow either a utility company access to underground utilities or drainage from uphill areas.  The utility company and/or the Township are only responsible for the underground piping and/or wiring.  The easement restricts property owners from altering or blocking these drainage flow easement areas.

JCP&L Environmental Conservation Partnership Helps Boost American Kestrel Population

Representatives from Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), New Jersey Audubon and the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife recently banded four American Kestrel chicks at a nest box located at the South Branch Wildlife Management Area in Hillsborough, New Jersey. This marks the second consecutive year the three organizations have partnered to help boost the population of this threatened species.

"American Kestrel populations are experiencing long-term declines in North America and in 2012 they were added to the list of threatened species in New Jersey," said John Parke, stewardship project director of New Jersey Audubon. "With the help of JCP&L and the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, these nest boxes provide a critical part in the recovery of North America's smallest falcon."

The American Kestrel population has declined primarily due to lack of suitable habitat and the scarcity of nesting sites. Last year, JCP&L worked with the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife to install the nest boxes where two chicks ultimately were born.
