Hillsborough Township's Parks and Recreation along with the Mayors Wellness Campaign Demonstrate How Going OUT is IN at Township Parks this July

If you're feeling cramped and like you don't get to spend enough time outside, you're not the only one.  Nearly three in ten U.S. adults do not spend time outside on a daily basis and of those who do, almost half spend less than 30 minutes in the fresh air according to a new survey released by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs.  That's why this July, Hillsborough Parks and Recreation along with NRPA are challenging everyone to get out and visit their community parks and recreation during national Park and Recreation Month.

This year's theme, "OUT is IN," encourages individuals, families, friends and coworkers to do something outside everyday that they would normally do inside.  From picnicking in the park instead of sitting inside at a table to sending an email or even holding a meeting outside, there are small ways you can make going OUT part of your daily routine.  The parks and facilities run by Hillsborough Township offer ample opportunities to go OUTside, get INspired, change your OUTlook and get INvolved.

Effective July 1, 2014 there will be enhanced penalties for Talking or Texting on a Handheld Device while Driving.  A violation of N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3 will no longer be a payable violation.  A person issued a summons for this statute will be required to appear in court at which time their driver's history will be reviewed by a Municipal Court Judge  to determine the fine.  The new sentencing guidelines are as follows:

*    First offense:     fine of not less than $200 or more than $400
*    Second offense: fine of not less than $400 or more than $600
*    Third or subsequent offense: fine of not less than $600 or more than $800
o    Three motor vehicle points will be assessed for 3rd or subsequent offenses.
o    90 day loss of license may be imposed by the Judge for 3rd or subsequent offenses.

A portion of the money collected for these violations will be allocated to the Motor Vehicle Commission to fund an education program focused on the dangers of texting while driving.

Free Seminar for Persons with Disabilities & Their Caregivers: How to Prepare for Emergencies

Somerset County Freeholder Deputy Director Mark Caliguire invites residents with disabilities and their caregivers to attend a free emergency-preparedness seminar next month.

"We've experienced two major storms here in New Jersey just in the past three years," said Freeholder Caliguire, public health and safety liaison.  "It's important that every household have an emergency plan in place.  This seminar will address the special needs of residents with disabilities and guide them and their caregivers in preparing such a plan."

The program will be offered twice on Thursday, July 10, from noon to 2 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Somerset County Emergency Services Training Academy at 402 Roycefield Road.  Space is limited.  To register, call Sharon Capehart at 908-541-5726 or email her atcapehart@co.somerset.nj.us

'First Saturday of the Month' Drop-off July 12

Somerset County Freeholder Patricia Walsh, recycling liaison, invites Somerset County residents to take advantage of the next First Saturday of the Month Drop-off event on July 12 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Somerset County Recycling Center, located at 40 Polhemus Lane, Bridgewater, NJ 08807, to clean up around their homes.  July's First Saturday is being held the following week due to the Independence Day holiday.

First Saturday drop-off events enable busy residents to recycle tires, clean textiles and usual curbside items in one fell swoop, as well as help people in the community who are less fortunate by donating food items for a local food bank.

As part of the program, residents can drop off up to eight tires - with or without rims, scrap metal, used motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze and usual curbside materials, including chipboard items and plastic bottles and containers, marked #1 through #7.  Chipboard includes gift, shoe, shirt and all retail boxes, as well as cereal, cookie, pasta, cake and cracker boxes, without the plastic liners.  Also poster board, backing from writing pads and empty, dried-out steel paint cans are accepted.

Textiles (clean and dry) include drapes, curtains, sheets, towels, belts, handbags, shoes (pairs), clean cloth and small stuffed animals. Textiles only will be accepted in a plastic bag.
