Hillsborough Township's "Smoke Free" Recreational Areas Become a Reality

Smoking Prohibited at Township Parks and Recreational Areas

Hillsborough Township adopted an ordinance at Tuesday's Township Committee Meeting banning smoking at the Township's parks and recreational areas.  It was a joint effort between the Township Committee, the Board of Health and the Hillsborough-Millstone Municipal Alliance.

"Somerset County already bans smoking at County Parks and Recreational facilities, it is only fitting that we also ban smoking at Hillsborough Parks and Recreational facilities," stated Mayor Doug Tomson during the ordinance adoption.  The ordinance amends the Code of the Township of Hillsborough, Chapter 221 to include a section to 'prohibit smoking in Township Parks'.

The concept was brought forth on two fronts to the Township Committee; first by the Municipal Alliance and also by the Regional Chronic Disease Coalition of Somerset through the Township's Health Department.  The Coalition's mission is the prevention of chronic illness with smoke prevention as a top goal because it is a major, preventable cause of heart disease, cancer and other chronic health issues.  The Regional Cancer Coalition will donate signs to be placed around the parks, alerting the public about the law.

Township Conducts Active Shooter Response Training

Municipal Complex Closed to the Public on Friday, June 13th - 10am until Noon

Hillsborough Township Mayor Doug Tomson advised that employees of the Municipal Complex, including the Library and Board of Education offices will be participating in an Active Shooter Response Training exercise on Friday, June 13th.  The building will be closed to the public from approximately 10am until noon.

"In the interest of safety for Township employees and visitors, there is a need for this type of training exercise and to bring awareness in case of an emergency situation," stated Committeewoman Gloria McCauley, Liaison to Public Safety.

In a collaborated effort between the Township Administration, Hillsborough Township Police Department and the Office of Emergency Management, the training exercise will be conducted in a similar manner as a previous one that was held at Hillsborough High School.  The intention of the training exercise is to prepare employees in the event an active shooter should enter the complex.

The Hillsborough Fire District Announces an improved ISO classification

Hillsborough New Jersey - The Hillsborough Fire District is excited to announce that the ISO Public Protection Classification for Hillsborough Township has significantly improved.

ISO's Public Protection Classification Program (PPC) plays an important role in the underwriting process at insurance companies. In fact, most U.S. insurers-including the largest ones-use PPC information as part of their decision making when deciding what business to write, coverage's to offer or prices to charge for personal or commercial property insurance.

The ISO survey and inspection reviewed numerous items within the Hillsborough fire district including apparatus and equipment, firefighter training, water supply availability, fire prevention office capabilities and emergency dispatch facilities. Hillsborough's new Public Protection Classification improved from a 5/9 to 3/3Y. The PPC rating scale uses a 1 through 10 classification with a classification of 1 being the best.

BOROSAFE to Host Suicide Awareness and Prevention Event at Hillsborough High School

BoroSAFE (Suicide Awareness for Everyone) will hold its 3rd Annual Suicide Awareness and Prevention event on Saturday, June 14, 2014 from 9:00am - 12:00pm in the Hillsborough High School Auditorium. This event looks to bring community members together and open up a dialog about this difficult-to-discuss mental health issue. It is through public awareness and continued communication that individuals become aware of the resources that are available.

The day will include a special encore performance of the Allegra School of Music and Arts' play "I Don't Want to Talk About It". The play was written by Bradley Hayward and confronts the daily challenges of teenage life, from dealing with parents who just don't get it, to bullying, rumors, and suicide. The play is directed by Donnetta Bishop-Johnson and stars Emily Josbeno, Niya Roman, Catherine Rommel, Elizabeth Rommel, Bryan Schultz, and Rachel Underberg-Davis.

Following the performance, the student actors as well as local mental health professionals will hold a question and answer session. Local mental health organizations will have information tables set up to provide details on service offerings and assistance. Professional development hours will be provided upon request.
