Township Receives Safety Award for the 4th Consecutive Year

For the fourth year in a row, Hillsborough Township has earned the distinction and top honor of Exceptional Safety Performance at the Annual Safety Awards and Safety Kickoff Meeting of the Central Jersey Joint Insurance Fund.  "Hillsborough Township again earned the Certificate of Achievement and a $1,500 monetary award in recognition of this achievement," stated Committeewoman Gloria McCauley, Liaison to Public Safety.

The Township of Hillsborough applied to, and was accepted as, a member of the Central Jersey Joint Insurance Fund (CJJIF) in 2000.  Membership into any JIF is voted on by the existing member towns, and a municipality's financial stability and insurance claims history are deciding factors in the process.

By participating in the CJJIF members see the benefit of reduced insurance costs.  Additionally, the CJJIF provides many free services which independent insurers would charge for, such as safety training seminars, safety videos, frequent unannounced safety inspections and on the job observations.

Hillsborough Basketball Players Donate to Local Resource Shelter

Once again, the St. Joseph's CYO Basketball Program teamed with the Resource Center of Somerset County to collect non-perishable food items for the victims of domestic abuse to help fill the Resource Center's food pantry at a time when its supplies are at record lows.

Each basketball player and family was asked to collect non-perishable food items as well as store gift cards and monetary donations.   During the month of February, each of the 27 teams staffed a food collection table at Sunday Masses and at home games.  The original goal was 100 bags.  However, more than 325 basketball players and their families collected over 143 bags of groceries and raised over $800 in donations of cash and supermarket gift cards.  Prior year's programs included a "No texting while Driving Campaign" with over 500 signatures collected, a 4,500 t-shirt collection program for disaster victims in Haiti, over 250 cell phones donated for the Somerset Resource Center and 180 pairs of soccer cleats donated for soccer players in lower-economic areas.

Featured here is the 8th grade girl's Blue Storm Basket Ball team along with John Lanahan, head coach of the Blue Storm Team and director of the St. Joe's CYO Basketball Program, Paula Obenauer, the leader of the Stewardship Program, coaches Gerry Donohue, Steve Hopson, and John Obenauer. Not featured in the picture are core volunteers Claudine Lanahan and Noreen Koval.

Providing Help & Hope...One Cell Phone at a Time

The Resource Center of Somerset invites you to help make a difference in the lives of domestic violence victims by providing Help and Hope...one cell phone at a time.  Donating your used cell phone will help provide services to victims of domestic abuse - women, men and children, free of charge.

Many Somerset County residents, as well as people throughout New Jersey, are significantly impacted by domestic violence.   They endure countless indignities and assaults that transcend the physical aspect of abuse.  The Resource Center of Somerset is a non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to serving those whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence. Our mission is to end domestic abuse and empower victims by providing protection, education and resources.

Our services include: a 24-hour hotline (866-685-1122), emergency shelter, transitional housing, legal advocacy, individual and group counseling, case management, children services, domestic violence response teams and community education.

With your help we can make a difference in the lives of the thousands of people in Somerset County who are touched by domestic violence annually by providing a safe, supportive and empowering environment that promotes healing and assists individuals as they engage in their journey from victims to survivors. The greater number of used cell phones we collect, the more we can do to help those who reach out to us.
