Hillsborough Township Goes Red

Mayor Doug Tomson and Committeewoman Gloria McCauley joined Municipal, Library and BOE employees for National Wear Red Day, in an effort to continue to bring awareness to heart disease in women.  

Additionally, as part of the Mayors Wellness Campaign, Mayor Tomson has invited all Hillsborough adults age 20 and over to take the million hearts pledge and get entered into a drawing for a free heart healthy cookbook and crock pot.

Township Declares February as American Heart Month 


Mayor Doug Tomson and presented a proclamation to Hillsborough Rescue Squad, Chief David Gwin at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting declaring February as American Heart Month.  In 2013 the Hillsborough Rescue Squad became an American Heart Association's Training Center.  They have been a training site for many years, but recently achieved Training Center status.

Mayor Tomson Swears in New Officers at Woods Road Fire House  

Last month, Mayor Doug Tomson conducted the oath of office for the 2014 Officers of the Woods Road Fire House, Hillsborough Fire Company #3.

Hillsborough Township is very fortunate to have so many dedicated volunteers in all of the Township's Fire Companies.

Hillsborough's Building Department Introduces: The Builder's Corner 

Quarterly Informational Segments

Staying in line with his promise to enhance communication when he was selected as Mayor for the Township, Doug Tomson introduced a new quarterly segment Tuesday evening at the Township Committee meeting to further develop communication channels between the Township and the public.

"I am proud to introduce a new concept from our Building Department; the Builder's Corner will be issued on a quarterly basis highlighting an information topic each time.  It is our intention to assist those individuals who call upon the Department for information," stated Mayor Doug Tomson.

"The first segment is explaining the process that permits have on real estate transactions," added Mayor Tomson.

Hillsborough / Millstone Municipal Alliance, BoroSafe, Hillsborough Life Skills and Dreams for Kids to Host Hillsborough Joes vs. NFL Pros

The Hillsborough / Millstone Municipal Alliance in collaboration with BoroSafe, Hillsborough Life Skills and Dreams for Kids are set to host the first ever "Hillsborough Joes vs. the NFL Pros - Scoring Points for Kids," announced Mayor Doug Tomson at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.  

The fundraiser basketball game is set to be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the Hillsborough High School with proceeds from the event benefiting the Hillsborough / Millstone Municipal Alliance, BoroSafe, Life Skills and Dreams for Kids.  

For general admission tickets, advance purchase tickets are $10 and the doors open at 6:15pm.  For VIP advance ticket sales the cost is $30 and that allows for VIP access for some one on one time with the Pros prior to game time, photo ops and a light meal to be enjoyed with the Pros.  Ticket sales are through the Hillsborough Life Skills and can be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/555105 or by contacting the Life Skills Office and Minda Maggio at 908-431-6600 extension 2809 or email Rebecca Grossman at borojoesvspros@gmail.com

Annual Fire Commissioners Election to be Held on Saturday, February 15th From 2-9pm 

The Annual Election of the Fire Commissioners will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014.   

Bruce Vatter and Peter Michael Carone are running for one commission seat (with a 3 year term).  

Polls will be open from 2:00pm until 9:00pm at Hillsborough Township Municipal Complex, The Peter J. Biondi Building, 379 South Branch Rd, Hillsborough, NJ  08844.

QUESTION #1:

Shall the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Township of Hillsborough, County of Somerset, be authorized to fix, determine and certify to the tax assessor of the Township of Hillsborough, the amount of $1,764,525.00 as and for the current expense to be raised for the ensuing year, including Apparatus and Equipment Housing, Insurance, Uniform Fire Code, Neshanic Contract, Administrative Expenses, Contingencies and Appropriations for Fire Company #1, #2 and #3?

Reminder - Applications Being Accepted for Spring Grants 

The Hillsborough Township Credit Card Advisory Committee opened the application process for grant applications for the first round of grants for 2014.  Applications will be accepted through February 28, 2014 and can be found online at www.hillsborough-nj.org or at the Municipal Clerk / Administrator's office.  Completed applications must be returned to the Municipal Clerk / Administrator's office by February 28, 2013 to be considered for funding.

The 15 Minute Child Break presentation is supported by research which demonstrates that kids who communicate regularly with their parents about their daily activities are 67% less likely to be involved with substance abuse than children who have little or no communication.

Somerset County Sheriff Announces Nixle Registration for Community Alerts

The Somerset County Sheriff's Office is now using Nixle to send alerts, advisories and community information to the citizens of Somerset County.

Nixle is a community-information service provider built exclusively to deliver safe, trustworthy communications.  It connects government agencies to residents in real time, bringing information to residents of geographically targeted areas and neighborhoods.  Information is available over cell phones by text message, email and the Web.
 
"Communications may include relevant safety and community-event information, such as upcoming medicine collection drop-off dates, child-safety-seat events, missing "Project LifeSaver" clients, Sheriff's sales and training events," said Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano.

Residents of Somerset County can immediately begin receiving pertinent information via text message, email and the Web by registering at www.nixle.com.

Join Road Runner Club of America Certified Coach Jerry Baron for this 10-session training class.   This class is designed to prepare you for Superhero Half Marathon (www.superherohalf.com) in Morristown NJ on Sunday, May 18, 2014.

Run Around the Park 5k on Saturday, April 5th 

The Hillsborough Township Department of Parks and Recreation will host the inaugural Run Around the Park 5k on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 9:30am at Ann Van Middlesworth Park in Hillsborough, NJ.

In addition to the 5k, there will be a Finish Line Festival at 10:00am with music, food, and an opportunity to win prizes.  Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Participants are asked to bring a canned food item or other donation item to benefit the Hillsborough Community Assistance Network.

The course will start and finish at Ann Van Middlesworth Park.

Registration is $20 ($15 for children under age 12) and includes the race entry, a t-shirt (guaranteed to those who register prior to March 16) and admission to the Finish Line Festival. Participants can register online at the Hillsborough Parks and Recreation website, or by calling or visiting the office during normal business hours.

Volunteers Ready to Help Out This Tax Season

Appointments Available Through April 15

Volunteer tax counselors have been trained to assist Somerset County residents in preparing their federal and New Jersey income tax returns.

After passing the IRS and AARP tests, these volunteers are ready to help low- and middle-income residents prepare their tax returns. Special emphasis is placed on helping senior citizens and residents with disabilities.                 

All volunteers have taken additional training in order to help county residents who wish to file their returns electronically. E-filing enables taxpayers to obtain a more rapid refund if they have money coming back to them.
