Weather Advisory
February 12, 2014

Weather Advisory from Hillsborough Township:

The forecast for the next 24-48 hours predicts a strong coastal storm for tonight into Thursday. Heavy snow, sleet, and coastal flooding are all threats from this storm.   10+ inches of snow are expected where the heaviest snow band sets up.  Much of the region will see at least some snow.  Snow will start later this evening, after the  afternoon/evening commute.  Warnings & advisories have been posted. Icing due to freezing rain no longer appears to be a major threat from this event.  However, heavy wet snow will cling to trees and wires.    Strong winds will be an issue with this event as the storm intensifies along the coast. Gusts up to 50 mph are possible along the coast, with gusts in the 20 to 35 mph range  inland from late tonight through most of Thursday.  This will cause added stress to power lines and tree limbs covered with heavy snow.Minor coastal flooding is likely and moderate coastal flooding is possible with this storm along the Atlantic coast, as well as in the Delaware Bay & Raritan Bay.  The high tides to watch are both high tides on Thursday, as well as the morning high tide on Friday.  Significant rainfall along the coast may worsen the coastal flooding impacts.

Please tune into your local weather for updated forecasts.
Emergency closures or delayed openings will be posted as they become available

REMINDER: 911 is for Emergency use only.  Non emergencies, please call 908-369-4323.

Designation of Snow Emergency No Parking on Snow Covered Streets

Township Code Chapter 143 VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC, Schedule XVI:  Snow Emergency - No Parking whenever snow has fallen and an emergency shall exist.  No vehicle shall be parked on either side of any of the streets the accumulation is such that it covers the street or highway.

The parking prohibitions shall remain in effect after the snow has ceased until the streets have been plowed sufficiently and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic. Violators are subject to have their vehicles ticketed and towed.

Snow and Your Driveway

Individual property owners are responsible from their driveways and sidewalks.

During plow-able snow events, some snow from the roadway will inevitably end up in your driveway so, if possible, try not to shovel your driveway until your street has been completely plowed. The Public Works Department will attempt to clear the center of the street first, then each side.

When shoveling your driveway, do not blow or shovel the snow from your driveway or sidewalk into the street. Place snow on the left side of the driveway (as you look at the house) so that when the plow comes along, the snow is not plowed into your driveway, but rather pulled away from it.

Help Dig Out Fire Hydrants

Residents are asked to assist the Volunteer Fire Departments and please clear out snow from fire hydrants.
For safety sake, please keep all children away from streets and out of the way of snow plows. The drivers of such trucks sit high and it should not be assumed that they will see a child playing in or near the street.

Power Outage and Other Safety Information:

In the event you experience a loss of power, please contact your power company directly and report the outage.

Mailboxes:

  • Individual property owners are responsible for removing snow from in front of their mailboxes.
  • The primary cause of mailbox damage is heavy snow discharged from the snowplow blade.
  • On the rare occasion that a mailbox is damaged, residents living on municipality maintained roadways can e-mail the DPW at dpw@hillsborough-nj.org to report a snow damaged mailbox.
Do not place trash cans or recycling cans out until the plows have passed. If you must put them out, place them well back from the curb line, so the plows or projected snow does not hit them. Also, please remove empty cans as soon as possible.
