Biondi By Pass Sign Funded with Private Funds - No Taxpayer Dollars Utilized

Sponsors were honored at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting with a certificate of appreciation for their support of the two Peter J. Biondi By Pass signs that will officially mark the recently opened roadway.

Late last fall, Phase One of the Peter J. Biondi By Pass was opened for motor vehicle traffic, the only items missing were the commemorative signs with the Peter J. Biondi name.  Hillsborough Township was able to raise sufficient private funding for the signs not utilizing any Hillsborough Taxpayer dollars.

"It gives me tremendous honor to call upon the following group of individuals and present these certificates of appreciation to them for support of the Peter J. Biondi By Pass," stated Mayor Doug Tomson prior to the presentation Tuesday evening.

Municipal Evening Hours: Update

*    Clerk's Office: 2nd & 4th Tuesdays Until 7pm
*    Construction Office: Tuesdays Until 7pm
*    Health Department: 2nd & 4th Tuesdays Until 7pm

Mayor Doug Tomson reminded residents that certain Municipal Departments have evening hours to meet the needs of our residents.

The Construction Department is open until 7pm Tuesday evenings for permit pick up and drop off as well as scheduling inspections.

The Health Department / Registrar of Vital Statistics will now be open on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month, similar to the Clerk's Office. The Office of Vital Statistics offers the following services for Township Residents: certified copies of all vital records, including marriage / civil union certificates, birth and death certificates, again provided the event occurred in Hillsborough, and marriage / civil union licenses for residents by appointment only.   Residents can also utilize this time pick up recycling buckets at the Office of Vital Statistics during these extended hours.

"As we continue to make our Municipal Offices more accessible, it is important to remind our residents when there are extended hours for their convenience", stated Mayor Doug Tomson at Tuesday's meeting.

Mayor Tomson stated, "In the event there be an issue that cannot be dealt with during the evening hours, the information will be gathered and followed up by the appropriate departmental personnel the following day."

Drinking Water Could Taste, Smell More of Chlorine, Utility Warns

A change in the way drinking water is processed at two water treatment plants could make Somerset County tap water taste a bit more like chlorine for a while.

New Jersey American Water will temporarily change from chloramine, a combination of chlorine and ammonia, to free chlorine as part of its annual pipeline maintenance program at its Raritan-Millstone water treatment plant in Bridgewater and its Canal Road water treatment plant in Somerset, according to a statement from the utility.

The change will begin on Jan. 21 and last through March, during which time customers maybe notice an increase in the taste and smell of chlorine in their water. This is normal and will be temporary only until the system maintenance is complete, the statement said.

Somerset County communities to be affected include Bedminster, Belle Mead, Bound Brook, Branchburg, Bridgewater, Franklin, Green Brook, Hillsborough, Manville, Martinsville, Millstone, Montgomery, North Plainfield, Peapack-Gladstone, Raritan, Somerville and South Bound Brook.

Donations Sought for the Homeless

The Somerset County Department of Human Services is seeking donations of personal, clothing and snack items to be included in packages that will be distributed on Wednesday, Jan. 29, when the county conducts its annual Point-in-Time survey of homeless individuals and families in Somerset County.

Requested personal items include shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, deodorant, body lotion, feminine hygiene products and new blankets and towels.  Clothing items include new hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, socks, underwear, T-shirts, sweatshirts and sweatpants.  Other items include bottled water, juice boxes and individually wrapped snacks, such as granola bars, crackers, nuts and trail mix.

"I want to thank the public for their generosity in the past and hope that they will open their hearts again this year," said Freeholder Robert Zaborowski, human services liaison. "Given the difficult economy, individuals and families that are already vulnerable are finding it even more difficult to make ends meet, and any donation would be greatly appreciated."
