Tis the Season to Spread Joy...Sponsor a Family in Need for the Holidays

Deputy Mayor Doug Tomson announced at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting it's that time of year again to spread holiday cheer and joy. The Hillsborough Community Assistance Network "CAN", formerly known as the Hillsborough Food Pantry is gearing up for the holidays and the  annual Holiday Program for Township families in need. The Community Assistance Network is looking for residents to sponsor families enrolled in the program.
"We've all been affected by the poor economy and see how easily one can fall on hard times. It is important that we remember those that are less fortunate by helping them out this holiday season. What better way than to adopt a family for the holiday and help give them a holiday to remember," stated Deputy Mayor Doug Tomson.

Adopt-A-Family Program to Aid Needy Residents

You can help make this Thanksgiving special for a needy family in your town through the fourth annual Adopt-A-Family program being promoted by the Somerset County Board of Freeholders.

"We often hear that people want to help others within their own community," said Freeholder Patricia Walsh.  "This is a perfect way for residents to earmark donations to help feed needy families in their own or neighboring towns."

The estimated cost of a Thanksgiving meal is $40.  Anyone wishing to donate may send a check to any of the following local programs:
  • Food Bank Network of Somerset County, P.O. Box 149, Bound Brook, NJ 08805
  • Franklin Township Food Bank, P.O. Box 333, Somerset, NJ 08875-0333
  • Hillsborough Food Pantry, Attn: Social Services Department, 379 South Branch Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844

Leaf Program Continues

The Township Leaf Program continues through the end of the year.  Leaves should be raked to the curb NOT in the roadway.  Leaves can be placed in a homemade bin with stakes and wire fence to contain the leaves in one area, no higher than 36 inches at the curb.

Somerset County Tire Recycling

Residents can recycle tires at First Saturday of the Month events throughout the year at the Somerset County Recycling Center, located at 40 Polhemus Lane in Bridgewater, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents can bring up to eight tires, with or without rims, to scheduled Saturday Drop-off events.

Residents and farmers also can take advantage of scheduled tire drop-off events during the year. Proof of residency is required at these events. A listing of tire drop-off locations, dates and times is posted below.

Proper disposal of tires benefits communities. Scrap tires have the potential to collect standing water and attract mosquitoes. To prevent West Nile virus, tires should be stored indoors or in a covered container until they can be properly disposed. This requirement is enforceable by the Somerset County Health Department.

The tire drop-off program is funded through a grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection.
