HEALTH ADVISORY: West Nile Virus Update

September is the peak of the West Nile Virus season. The West Nile Virus can be transmitted to humans via mosquito bites.  This year, six New Jersey residents in counties outside of Somerset have tested positive for the West Nile Virus, and two residents have died.

According to the Federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC), about 80% of most people infected with the West Nile Virus do not become ill and may not develop symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may be mild or severe and show up two to fourteen days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Mild symptoms, which occur in about 20% of those who become infected, may include flu-like illness with fever, headache, body aches, nausea, diarrhea, sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach, and back.

Severe symptoms, which usually occur in individuals with certain health conditions and in less than 1% of people who become infected, include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, disorientation, and/or swelling of the brain (encephalitis or meningitis), which can lead to coma, convulsions, and death.

Somerset County Announces 4-H Fair Drawing Winners

Over 30 visitors were on a winning streak at this year's Somerset County 4-H Fair in drawings held at the Somerset County Government tents.  Visitors enjoyed displays, played games, learned about the county and entered drawings for prizes, which were generously donated by local businesses and organizations.

"We're pleased that so many people from our county, neighboring counties and out of state made the 4-H Fair a destination spot and visited the Government tents again this year" said Freeholder Director Peter S. Palmer. "Thanks to the generosity of many merchants and organizations, we were able to give out wonderful prizes in drawings at various booths.

"The county looks forward to the annual 4-H Fair as a venue for getting the word out about Somerset County's many programs and services," he said.  "County employees enjoy sharing information with residents and their children in a relaxed atmosphere, and the children enjoy learning about the county through games, hands-on projects and game wheels.
