Weather Didn't Stop Memorial Day Commemoration Program

Hillsborough residents withstood the chilly breeze last Saturday to honor Township Veterans along the annual Memorial Day parade route and Garden of Honor Ceremony.  The day's events began early with Hillsborough Township's Salute to Veterans Breakfast held at the Peter J. Biondi Building on the grounds of the Municipal Complex.
The Parade, led by Grand Marshal Hillsborough Veteran Major Rob Movshin, began immediately after the breakfast.  Major Movshin shared what Memorial Day means to him in a moving speech at the Garden of Honor Ceremony.

Hillsborough EMS Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Paid Daytime Coverage

On May 23rd, Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, Hillsborough Township Administrator Anthony Ferrera and Township and Somerset County Emergency Management officials joined Hillsborough EMS members to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of paid daytime EMS coverage in Hillsborough. Assemblyman Ciattarelli presented a Joint Legislative Resolution from the New Jersey State Senate and Assembly which he co-sponsored with Senator Kip Bateman and Assemblywoman Donna Simon. The resolution praised Hillsborough for being the first town in Somerset County and one of the first in central New Jersey to address the problem of too few daytime volunteers.

Accepting the framed resolution were Michael Calabrese, a paramedic who joined the squad in 1981 and Lori Voorhees, a registered nurse/paramedic who joined the squad in 1985. Mike and Lori worked the very first paid shift on May 23, 1988.

The Hillsborough Rescue Squad has been providing service since 1955, but by 1988 there were only 11 members available for daytime duty. All worked full time and were available only on their days off which lead to "some pretty sporadic coverage," recalled EMS Chief David Gwin. "On some days, we had a lot of people around; but on other days, virtually no one was in town."
