Successful 4th Annual Community Clean Up Day

Saturday, April 20th marked the 4th Annual Community Clean Up Day, which held in conjunction with Earth Day Observance. Nearly 100 volunteers came out in support of the beautification of 29 East Mountain Road, which was the newest piece of property acquired by the Township in Open Space Preservation. New beds were created with plantings, the side railings in the parking lot were stained and the old police building was prepped and received some fresh paint.

Annual Art Show - A "Giant" Success!
|
 Last month the municipal complex was home to the Annual Hillsborough Cultural Art Commission's 20132 Fine Art and Photography Exhibit. Over $4,500 in prizes were awarded through the Commission to High School participants and above. Nearly 500 guests ventured through the displays over the three day period which commenced with the Awards Ceremony and the unveiling of the Annual Portrait, this year featuring Hillsborough's Shaun O'Hara, former NY Giant and Super Bowl Champion. The Hillsborough Library Presents The Documentary: Re-imagining Our Watershed - A Renaissance on the Raritan on May 3rd at 6:30PM

 The Raritan Economic Development Committee, in conjunction with the Rutgers E.J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy and the Sustainable Raritan River Collaborative will present the film, 'Reimagining Our Watershed: A Renaissance on the Raritan'. On Friday May 3 at 6:30pm. This film features projects and organizations from all areas of the Raritan, South Branch, The Upper Raritan and the Lower Raritan, and many tributaries too. Dr. Judy Shaw, Director of the Raritan River Initiative, will provide comments. We will also share the story of one very special project - the restoration of fish runs through the removal of two obsolete dams on the river. John Jengo, Principal Hydrologist with MWH Global will give remarks. Light Refreshments will be served.

 Come to the Flea Markets on Saturday, May 4th at the Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Co #2 at 375 Rt. 206 in Hillsborough. It will start at 9 AM and go as long as there are customers. The firehouse is across from TD Bank and near Hillsborough Radiology. The Flea Markets are held outside, behind the Fire House, in the upper parking lot of Hamilton Road. Parking is on the grass behind the firehouse and in the upper parking lot, above Hillsborough Radiology. There is no parking in the Hillsborough Radiology's parking area. Flea Market outside spaces are available for $15 each. Vendors can just show up that morning and pay then, no reservations needed. Hillsborough Soccer Club Tryouts on May 4th
|
 The Hillsborough Soccer Club is hosting tryouts for its competitive travel soccer teams on May 4, 2013 at the Country Classics Fields on Amsterdam Drive in Hillsborough.
Tryouts are for the Fall 2013 / Spring 2014 season. Tryout times are by age group and the full schedule can be found on the Club's website www.hillsboroughsoccerclub.org
The Club offers a fun, competitive soccer environment and professional coaching for boys and girls ages 8 - 17.
The Club also offers a non-competitive Youth Development Program for boys and girls ages 5 - 8 that places a strong emphasis on soccer basics.
Boys and girls interested in trying out (including current players) MUST register online for tryouts prior to attending. Registration is free and can be done at www.hillsboroughsoccerclub.org.

Applications Due May 15 for Youth Leadership Somerset Class of 2013-14
|
 Applications are being accepted for Youth Leadership Somerset, a program for young leaders who live in Somerset County and who are interested in developing their potential. The program prepares young people to take active leadership roles in their community. The deadline is Wednesday, May 15. "Youth Leadership Somerset introduces students to local government and the wide-ranging services and programs that are available to county residents," said Freeholder Deputy Director Patrick Scaglione, liaison to the youth leadership program. "We encourage participants to hone their leadership skills by developing and implementing projects that give back to their community." A diverse group of students, grades eight through 12, are being sought to participate in the nine-month program. Class members will meet community leaders from all aspects of county life, who will speak on a wide variety of topics.

Help 'Stamp Out Hunger' by Leaving Food for Your Mail Carrier on May 11th
|
 On Saturday, May 11, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will collect food donations at residents' mailboxes in order to provide assistance to the millions of Americans who are struggling with hunger.
All you have to do is leave food in one of the bags left at your mailbox sometime in the next week.

Art Gallery Exhibition Celebrates Somerset County's 325th Anniversary
|
 A special exhibition of historical maps, sketches, postcards, paintings and artifacts in the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Gallery will celebrate the county's 325th anniversary. Somerset County was founded May 22, 1688. The display will run April 29 through May 24 on the first floor of the county administration building at 20 Grove St. Glass display cases are on the third floor. Free parking is available in the attached parking deck; the entrance is off East High Street. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. The exhibition will include a 1790s copper tea kettle from the Somerset County Historical Society; a number of artifacts on loan from the Abraham Staats House in South Bound Brook and from the Lord Stirling archaeological dig in Bernards; a New Jersey map dated 1776; a large sketch of the former Calco plant in Bridgewater (where the Somerset Patriots ballpark is located today); a 1938 newspaper article about the county's 250th anniversary; vintage postcards depicting the Somerset County Courthouse from the 1800s to the 1960s as well as early 20th-century views of downtown Somerville; photos of the Griggstown section of Franklin Township; a set of World War I medals; arrowheads found on a property in Bridgewater; and other items.

Free Skin Cancer Screenings

 Free skin cancer screenings will be held on Saturday, May 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Somerset Medical Center's Family Practice, 110 Rehill Ave., Somerville. The screening is for anyone who has not seen a dermatologist in the last two years and has not been diagnosed with skin cancer. Hillsborough resident Billy Biviano was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in Novemeber 2012 at the age of 14 months.
Help us support the Biviano Family on Saturday, May 11th, from 6-8PM.
Join us for an evening of jumping, sliding and bouncing fun at Jump!Zone. Admission includes access to all inflatables (some height restrictions apply) as well as pizza and fountain beverages.
Advanced registration is required. Payment of $15 per person will be payable at the door on the night of the event. Children under 2 are free.
