We are pleased to tell you that Aetna has successfully completed its acquisition of Coventry Health Care, Inc. We are excited about the opportunities that our combined business creates. We'll build upon each other's strengths to provide quality products and services that deliver value and affordability to a broader group of customers across the U.S. and overseas.
Together, we've enhanced the depth and breadth of our core insurance business. We've also increased our presence in the fast-growing government sector. As a combined company, Aetna has 22 million medical members plus 2 million Medicare Part D members (based on membership as of March 31, 2013).
Our strengths complement each other. Coventry's strong relationships with local hospitals and physician groups improve Aetna's network and competitive position. Aetna adds a strong multi-site capability to Coventry's locally focused business. Coventry constituents also will benefit from joining a company with more than 160 years of experience, a strong financial position, a well-recognized brand and a shared commitment to empowering people to lead healthy lives.
We are beginning to move through a staged integration process. For the time being, we will continue to offer both companies' products and services. Aetna and Coventry integration teams have been hard at work for many months. We are confident that the integration will go smoothly for our customers.
