This commentary could legitimately be called
"informed speculation." Here it is....
By now, most voters are beginning to realize that, in reality, we have three main political entities in the USA. Two named and one unnamed. They are The Republicans, The Democrats and the "Establishment" Parties! Here is what may be unfolding in the Republican / "Establishment" Party!
Donald Trump wins Indiana, gets a few small states and then wins big in California. This puts him over the 1,237 delegates he needs. Grass roots Republicans now see that it is time to send a clear message so they decide to "make it happen" and it does... prior to the Cleveland Convention. The majority of Republican voters are ecstatic!
But wait! Trump gets to Cleveland and finds that the "word" has been passed down from the high mucky-mucks in the Party that there is no way they will accept him as the Republican Party Nominee no matter how many delegates he gets. So the plan to block him from the nomination proceeds according to a previously agreed to strategy. The strategy starts to unfold:
At the Convention it becomes clear that enough of the delegates to stop Trump are really "Trojan Horse" candidates for Cruz but are "directed" by the "Establishment." (Most are former Party loyalists, big donors and minor officials headed up by the State Party Chairman, who is in close communication with Party "higher-ups") They became delegates by associating with and using the Cruz "ground game." Now, at the Convention, since Trump won the necessary votes to be the nominee, they have been instructed to ABSTAIN from voting on the first ballot (the "fallback" position). Since the RNC and its Convention Chairman, Paul Ryan, controls the convention, the abstentions remove enough votes so that Trump does not get a majority on the first ballot. The Chair rules the "abstentions" legal and the second ballot voting begins.
Now, the delegates who are really Cruz delegates but who were mandated to support Trump on the first ballot, become free to vote for Cruz. The Chair, of course, rules all of this is "in order."
Many Cruz delegates now believe they have a green light to select Cruz as the nominee...but wait... many of them are really "Establishment" delegates who were elected just to STOP Trump...NOT to elect Cruz. The word comes down from "on high" that a certain number of the Cruz "Trojan Horse" delegates should abstain from voting for Cruz! Now Cruz doesn't have enough delegates to win either! Wow...A brilliant strategy to confuse the folks ...The "establishment" has fooled everybody and is now in the saddle to produce their own candidate.
At this point, maybe after several ballots, comes the big speech about how the polls show that Trump can't win in a contest with Hillary...and neither can Cruz... and a big unity speech with the theme being "the Party knows best" (they believed this one even before the Democrats did) and the "leaders" of the Republican Party cannot in "good conscience" vote for a "loser." (If any of them had a conscience they would have gone back to the farm by now) So, in a move toward "solidarity" (their continued control) they present xxxxxx to the Convention! ...Here he/she is!!! A big "unity" speech by the "new candidate" commences (Big fanfare...hoopla...etc., etc.) and, guess what? The "Establishment" candidate becomes the Party nominee.
Somebody has the temerity to suggest that this will cause a lot of trouble among the grass roots folks and will definitely continue the radical Democrat policies, led by Hillary, in power. The "Establishment" leadership's answer to that will be...
1. "This was an entirely democratic process that conformed to the best ethical standards and traditions of the Republican Party and strictly followed the rules." (translation: Our hands are "clean" and, don't forget that we make up the rules!)
2. "The folks are "loyal," do not want Hillary, will forget what happened in two news cycles, and will bite the bullet and vote Republican anyway...as they always do! Trust us!" (Not enough did in 2012...but no matter, we won't mention that!)
3. "They are too uninformed and easily persuaded to manage the Party or even their own affairs. Otherwise they would have seen this coming."
4. "Anyway, it doesn't matter because we are still in charge of the banks, the hedge funds, the big money donors, the Federal Reserve Bank, big (and ever expanding) government, our membership in the "Club" and a LOT more!"
There will be cries for a Trump Third Party candidacy, a "walkout" at the Convention... warnings about lots of people not voting in November (...unless there is a third Party headed by Trump). When queried by the media about the undemocratic and "deplorable" results of the Convention the Chair of the RNC will disagree and refer to the points mentioned above. He may simply say (in private) " ...We (the "Establishment") would rather have Hillary as President than Trump!"
