The Establishment Game Plan
  By Chuck MacNab

No!  This is not an April Fool's joke.  But the current Republican Party political machinations could well fall into the same category.  We are referring to the manner in which the Republican Establishment and its long time followers and associates are orchestrating an all out effort to stop Donald Trump from becoming the Republican Presidential Nominee for President of the United States.

First, we cite some general observations.  Currently, Trump leads by a wide margin in the number of primary voters who support him.  This is a fact that bedazzles and confuses Party leaders at all levels, particularly at the top. This was definitely NOT supposed to happen.  Hence, embarrassment reigns since early signals were sent out far and wide that Trump's candidacy was a joke, would fade fast and was nothing to worry about.  The Party leadership was so confident in this belief that they insisted at the first debate that all candidates sign a "pledge" to vote for the successful nominee.  Guess what? The situation changed.  Trump attained a commanding lead in seeking that title and now all bets are off.  Panic has set in among the power brokers, those controlling the big money handouts have become confused and the Party leaders have scrambled to come up with a backup plan.

Our objective is to place control of the Republican Party closer to the voters and farther away from Establishment control and, thereby, to keep insiders and special interests from disenfranchising the grass roots folks. To accomplish this it is critically essential to keep our eyes on how and why the Establishment is manipulating Ted Cruz and his supporters.  The last thing any of us want to ask ourselves in the morning after we've been had is "What the hell happened!" If we don't understand what is actually going on at these caucuses and conventions, many will not vote to accomplish the primary goal of restructuring the Republican Party into a broad, more appealing and fairer political entity. That objective is something both Trump and Cruz agree on and the Establishment doesn't like it because it takes away some of their power.

There are now two remaining anti-establishment candidates in the race. (Kasich is irrelevant.) One has a much better chance of reaching a majority than the other and that is what has the Establishment scrambling to make certain that neither Trump nor Cruz gets over the finish line! It is essential to note that the upcoming caucuses are NOT about Trump vs. Cruz.  They have everything to do with the Will of the People vs. continuing control by the Republican Establishment. Through the caucus process, the Establishment hopes to prevent "we, the people" from reaching the ultimate goal of producing a nominee who will NOT march to the drum beat of the special interests! That is the Establishment's goal coming out of the Convention in Cleveland. To attain this essential piece of their plan, they must gain a majority of state caucus delegates for Cruz. There MUST BE an open convention for their plan to work and this is their means of ensuring it.

With that in mind, we must recognize and understand the Establishment's Game Plan - one that is designed to maintain the status quo by retaining control through a nominee of their choice in direct opposition to the wishes of the majority of the electorate.  Here's how they plan to go about it.

The Establishment Game Plan - Plain and Simple

 *  Use every means or ruse possible to keep the frontrunner (Trump) from achieving the required number of electoral votes prior to the GOP Convention in July - currently 1237.  (I say "currently" because that can change - but more on that later.)

*  One of those "means" employs the use of the Trump's competition (Cruz). Since Trump is the only one likely to reach 1237 electoral votes by the time the Convention convenes, the Establishment's ploy in building support for Cruz reduces Trump's ability to reach the magic number and, of equal importance, divides and reduces the power of the anti-establishment forces. This sets the stage for an open convention wherein the GOP leadership can orchestrate the election of a nominee of their choice - not Trump, not Cruz - but a bona fide, card carrying member of the Establishment "Old Boy's Club."  Do Paul Ryan, Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney or their ilk come to mind? It's a tough call to make, but the good people among the Cruz supporters need to understand that they are being "played."  Does anyone think for a moment that the power brokers in the Party favor Cruz any more than they do Trump?  If the roles were reversed, the strategy would be the same.

*  Finally, the Establishment has conjured up all manner of alternate game plans, should any of the foregoing strategies fail.  The Party bosses control the rules by which the Convention proceedings will be managed.  Without getting into the weeds here, it is significant to note that some rules are subject to change in ways that would move the goal posts and ensure the outcome in the Establishment's favor, note paragraph #1 under Game Plan.

Bottom Line - Our Game Plan

It is absolutely essential that the Anti-Establishment forces understand what those who work for the Establishment are promoting. Many of them may not even recognize what is "afoot." We like to think that the views reflected by the electorate constitute a "movement." Call it a necessary shift of power whose time has come.  We believe, if successful, it will strengthen and revitalize the Republican Party.

We've come a long way - but there's still a rough road ahead. It may require many current Cruz supporters to realize that a vote for Cruz is a vote to keep an entrenched old guard protector of the "special interest cookie jar" in power. Why else would the Establishment join Cruz in an attempt to stop Trump? They dislike Cruz almost as much as they dislike Trump. In an open Convention do we believe for a minute that after 8, 10 or even 12 votes on the floor that they will accept either Trump or Cruz as opposed to one of the sudden unifying "saviors" referenced above or, as Karl Rove says, "a new face" not "tainted" by all of the campaign's ugly controversy?

As for being afraid of a delegate and voter revolt, they really couldn't care less because they actually believe the "dummies from fly-over country" will forget the power plays after a mere two or three news cycles. (I've actually heard them express these views.) The choice to return power to the people by voting for Trump at the caucuses may cause heartburn for some, but removing an entrenched and arrogant power structure makes it worth it. We hope you agree that the alternative - the status quo - is unacceptable. Let's play it smart and recognize the Establishment Game Plan for what it is - a calculated power play.
