 Shuttupville

Suppose you are running for mayor of Shuttupville, a little town not far from Nowhereton. Suppose you throw a party at a private venue which you rented for the evening. You didn't send out written invitations. You simply spread the word that all your friends, neighbors and acquaintances are invited to hear what you'd do differently if elected.

But the night of the party, a group of rowdies from the big city show up carrying signs, shouting vulgarities and flashing the middle finger at your guests as they get out of their cars. A few of the loudmouths go inside and begin to scream and gesticulate at the other attendees. It's a big crowd, and a few of those who want to hear what you have to say begin to take offense. Shouts and insults are exchanged and it looks as though the party might get out of hand.

What do you do? Evict the mischief makers? Call the cops? Or close down the party and tell everyone to go home?

What if the agitators then tell you this is how it is going to be every time you entertain? Wherever you go, they say, they will show up and shut you down. It's their first amendment right to keep you from speaking, they say. Besides, too many guests are showing up at your parties, and that might mean they don't like the way the town is being run.

The Shuttupville Town Crier which supports the status quo, blames you for the fracas. It's not the disrupters' fault, the editors opine. It's your fault for saying things the agitators don't want to hear, things they shouldn't have to hear. The editors chastise you because one of your supporters sucker punched a man being evicted. You caused it, they intone. No mention, of course, that the dude who cold-cocked the young rabble-rouser was 78-years-old and the mischief-maker was waving his middle fingers and shouting curses at the crowd.

In other words, if you hadn't upset the agitators by saying things they didn't agree with, they wouldn't have been forced to shut you up.

Please note: The Missouri Patriot has, thus far, taken no position in support of any candidate in the ongoing Presidential Primary race. However, as a journalism enterprise, we reserve the right at any time to be both critical and supportive of a wide range of issues and of candidates running for pubic office.  Our goal is to publish a sampling of information, views and opinions that we feel are representative of arguments being offered by various campaigns. One of our objectives is to provide voters with a sampling of information and opinion that we feel is interesting and informative. A motivating factor in our activities is to focus on what we believe to be in the public interest. It goes without saying that our choice of what to publish depends on many factors such as quality of writing, clarity, appeal to our audience and various other factors. It cannot be, and is not meant to be, all things to all people or comprehensive in coverage. (We do not sell things or advertise!)  Obviously, we are independent conservative oriented. We publish Guest Editor's opinions because we feel their views are not only interesting and informative but deserve whatever additional distribution we can give them. That said, their views are their own and do not necessarily mirror ours.
