Apple vs The Government
By Chuck MacNab
Many people believe the government's argument that, in the name of national security, Apple should create a key that will enable the government (and hackers) to read everything they want to read, or believe they need to read, on any Apple electronic device. Also, many side with Apple. If Apple were to comply with the government request it would negate a major reason why most people buy Apple devices like IPhones, personal computers and IPads. So, from a business point of view, it is understandable why Apple opposes this.
It is arguable that Apple's primary motivation is profit but might they be inadvertently protecting the Constitutional rights of all Americans? There was a report this morning on FOX Business channel that many politicians and government regulators, who were originally in favor of uncontrolled government snooping, are now changing their minds. Why should we be surprised at this development? Apple President, Tim Cook, is no fool. Right now, Apple is the most successful money making corporation on the planet and consequently sits on a mountain of cash.
We observe that literally every Congressman or Senator that would do just abut anything to have access to that huge bag of cash! Being "reasonable" on just about ANY issue included! Whether either side regarding the security issue is right or wrong (we tend to side with privacy) the argument matters little. As Deep Throat allegedly advised, "Follow the money!" Once again, we may well be witnessing the PRIVATE SECTOR fighting to protect our constitutional rights while politicians and bureaucrats, seeking more control, try to strip those rights away. They do so by using whatever current argument pops into public view! Fortunately, in this case, Apple has a big bag of money that can be VERY persuasive.
If you want to check the validity of Tim Cook's point (in the video link presented at the bottom of this page) concerning the availability of companies offering non-Apple world-wide encryption, go to https://agilebits.com and examine their 1Password encryption program. This is a company based outside of the U.S. that offers virtually unbreakable, no-back-door access, to anyone who purchases their program.
