The Cat's Meow
By Growltiger*

Generalology:
Growltiger is tired of the debates. The Republicans seem to have a debate every two weeks on a weeknight when football isn't being played, while the Democrats debate on a Saturday night when even their families have other plans.

Two and a half hours is too long.

The moderators might as well be on the stage because they're not moderators but rather agitators.

CNN seems to have learned from the Fox Megynecology Kelly debate, the first CNN food fight and the CNBC disaster that the more measured approach Fox Business Network took was a better path to not getting skewered. That doesn't mean CNN doesn't have the same agenda as the rest of the Establishment: Preserve power for the Republicrats and Democlans, just that they were smarter than Fox, the previous CNN debate and CNBC.

The audience was stacked with Establishment and Paul supporters, but if raucous favoritism was supposed to sway the tele-audience, it probably didn't.

The Candidates:
John Kasichapparently is back on his meds. Had this measured and mature John Kasich shown up in the previous debates, he'd probably be the favorite of the Republican wing of the Uniparty. But it may be too little too late. Governor Kasich's unhinged behavior in three of the previous debates made him look like he should be in an asylum instead of the White House. Governor Kasich has the best credentials of any establishment Republicrat with the exception of Hillary Clinton (which shows you dear readers just how much "experience" on paper is worth when it comes to the benefit of we the people).

Carly Fiorina has become tiresome. She has good ideas and is well spoken, but her hectoring manner makes Hillary look like Miss Congeniality at the Miss America pageant. How many times does she have to tell us she knows Vladimir Putin?

Marco Rubio got into a dust-up with Ted Cruz and came out the worst for it. Cruz is smarter, quicker on his feet, and doesn't let criticism get under his skin the way Rubio does. In that, Rubio is the Uniparty Establishment's successor to former governor, Jeb Bush, Mr. Rubio needs to explain to Americans who oppose illegal immigration just why it is a good idea to let anyone who can get here stay here.

Ben Carson: The doctor was in. Unfortunately, the moderators generally ignore Dr. Carson, and this time was no exception. Dr. Carson in his kind and gentle way pointed that out, but when they did deign to ask him a question, he answered thoughtfully.

Donald Trump: Like Dr. Carson, Donald Trump is neither a politician nor a seasoned debater. He generally gives an honest answer or opinion to questions, which is why the media-critics hate him, and 30-40 percent of the abandoned Republican base loves him. His positions and opinions are not written by staffers and consultants and memorized beforehand, therefore, he makes mistakes, which can be misinterpreted and always are. (See shutting down the Internet and targeting terrorists families*).

Ted Cruz: Senator Cruz took on Senator Rubio's pro-amnesty participation in the "Gang of Thirteen" in which Tea Party candidate Rubio dumped the Tea Party as soon as he got to DC and joined with Establishment Republicrats to grant legal status to the 11+ million people who moved into our country without our permission. Rubio was visibly shaken. Senator Rubio is the Establishment Republicrat should the Uniparty not be able to drag former governor Bush across the finish line. Senator Rubio took a shot at Senator Cruz's vote against the Patriot Act (which did not stop the Boston bombers even though it was in force and even though Russian intelligence warned the USA of the Tsarnaev brothers' radicalization).

Jeb Bush flexed his jaw muscles and attacked Donald Trump, which the establishment plants in the audience applauded. After all, that's what they were there for. (One wonders if they were bused in).  Former governor Bush probably is a nice man as Donald Trump has said repeatedly, but he comes off as an intellectual lightweight on a stage of intellectual heavyweights (two doctors, a couple of CEO's and a slew of lawyers). One cringes at the idea of Governor Bush negotiating with Vladimir Putin.

Chris Christie is a smart, capable, tough-as-nails attorney and would make a bang-up Attorney General. He did an excellent job on the debate stage, which is why he was there. According to some sources, he and Paul's poll numbers should have relegated both of them to the pre-game warm-up debate. (Growltiger did not watch the pre-game show so has no comment other than she bets Lindsay Graham went off the rails again. Senator Graham is one of the Uniparty members who think it's okay to invade Syria so long as we let Syrian refugees invade the USA.)

Rand Paul's supporters sounded few in number but made up for it in decibel level. Senator Paul's responses were the most schizophrenic of the night, segueing from brilliant common sense (lets not start World War III over Syria and maybe it's a bad idea to take out Middle East dictators without a back-up plan) to totally off-the-wall Twilight Zone nonsense like accusing Mr. Trump of wanting to shut down the Internet. *

The Moderators:
Though it was apparent from the first question that the object was to get the other eight candidates to pile on Donald Trump (which only Carly Fiorina, Rand Paul and Jeb Bush bit on), CNN obviously learned from its previous debate that food fights are too messy for prime time. Thus the tone was more Fox Business than CNBC. Wolf Blitzer did a good job as moderator and lost control only once or twice, one obvious problem being Jeb Bush who decided being tough means interrupting, ignoring warning lights and bells and talking over the moderator. Carly Fiorina tried the same in a previous debate as reflected in her plummeting poll numbers. It comes off not as tough but as downright rude. Note that the "rude" candidate did not interrupt the others, monopolize the mic and time or try to drown out the moderators who were trying to shut him up.

Hew Hughett (sic) came off as a fool, but he came off as a fool in the other debate, too. Mr. Hewitt honestly believes his intellect trumps (no pun intended) everyone else's and is eager to show off just how smart and knowledgeable he is. Unfortunately, he comes off as a brick short of a patio.

Growltiger did not take notes, so did not take down the lady moderator's name.
She did all right.

Conclusion:
It's doubtful that any minds were changed by the debate with the possible exception of Chris Christie's scrambling over Marco Rubio to take up a position as the Establishment Candidate for the right wing of the Uniparty.

Ad Libs:
*With reference to the focus on "No Fly Zones" in Syria, the dear reader should keep in mind that ISIS does not have any airplanes which means a no fly zone is directed at the lawful Syrian government (Assad) or Russia which already is in Syria at the invitation of the Syrian government. Secondly, why should the USA want to prevent the Syrian government and its ally, Russia, from defending itself in a civil war?  Whether President Obama and the Establishment Republicrats agree or not, Bashar Assad is the president of Syria. By helping the rebels against Assad, the United States has inadvertently helped ISIS.

*With reference to Mr. Trump's "closing down the internet", the politicians (including the moderators) made it sound as though Mr. Trump is advocating taking the Internet away from you and me. Indeed, when the question was asked, Growltiger thought that was what Mr. Trump had advocated. It turns out; Mr. Trump only wants to close the Internet to ISIS, which uses it as a recruiting tool to radicalize dicey Muslims residing in other countries, including the USA. Closing down ISIS's access is, according to some geek sources, entirely possible. ISIS has no satellites and must rely on other nations' satellites to spread its toxins.

*It is doubtful Mr. Trump advocates harming terrorists' families as Senator Paul blithely accused, however, the nation with the most experience dealing with terrorists (Israel) bulldozes terrorists'  family homes. It is difficult to believe the San Bernardino shooter's mother thought the pipe bombs and IEDs lying around the house were going to be used to go fishing, ergo she should not be held accountable for not warning the authorities.

*So far as having to placate peace-loving American Muslims lest they become crazed Islamic fundamentalist killers, that leap of logic is too far even for a cat.
