ERPRP
By Growltiger*

The Established Republican Professional Politicians and Pundits (ERPRP) are scratching their heads raw over what to do about the candidacy of billionaire businessman, Donald Trump.

From the Wall Street Journal's Editorial page to National Review to Fox News, those who know what's good for the rest of us can't understand why the ingrates who make up the GOP base don't support "experienced" candidates like Jeb Bush and/or Marco Rubio. After all, Mr. Bush governed Florida (1999 to 2007), is the son of, and brother of, two former presidents, and 44-year-old Senator Rubio has served five whole years in the United States Senate. What's a 69-year-old billionaire international businessman done to compare to those lofty credentials?

This isn't the first time Republican insurgents refused to accept the wisdom of their betters. In 1964, the ERPRP warned the ignat base that Senator Barry Goldwater would lose, and when he did, emitted a great "See! I told you so!"*

Twelve years later, in 1976, an upstart movie star and former California governor challenged Establishment candidate, Gerald R. Ford, in the primaries. Governor Reagan lost that particular contest, but four years later, to the chagrin of the ERPRP, snatched the nomination from "experienced" politician, George H. W. Bush. The ERPRP  convinced former Governor Reagan to accept Mr. Bush as his vice-president, and Reagan-Bush won election and four years later, re-election. Vice President Bush's successful run in 1988 generally is considered to be a grateful electorate's approving of a third Reagan term.

Like a heat seeking missile, however, President Bush returned to Establishment governance ("read my lips, no new taxes), the economy tanked, and in 1992, another insurgency erupted in the form of H. Ross Perot who garnered nearly 20% of the votes. The ERPRP generally credit Mr. Perot for having denied President Bush reelection, however, many analysts claim Mr. Perot took as many votes from then Governor Clinton as President Bush. Perot ran again in 1996 against President Clinton and ERPRP candidate Senator Robert Dole. Mr. Clinton won easily.

The Republican base remained relatively quiescent until 2010 when the TEA Party delivered the House (2010) and the Senate (2014) to the Republicans. Far from being grateful or supportive, the ERPRP was embarrassed by and dismissive of the TEA Party and joined with President Obama to maintain the kind of "establishment" government that's not disruptive to those who benefit from cheap labor (the Chambers of Commerce), votes (the Democrats) and free trade (Wall Street and Big Business). Which brings us to Donald Trump, a candidate as welcome to the ERPRP as a skunk at a garden party.

It remains to be seen whether the combined effort of the Wall Street Journal Editorial Page,  Fox News, Bush-Rove-Kasich-Establishment Super-PACs and Pro-Establishment Pundits will be able to deny Mr. Trump the Republican presidential nomination, but if they fail, it won't be for lack of trying.

*Today, Senator Goldwater is revered as the candidate who instigated the conservative movement in the Republican Party. Note that even though Establishment candidates Dole (1996), McCain (2008) and Romney (2012) all lost, too, there were no "See! I told you so's" from the ERPRP's. And in the case of Governor Romney, the ERPRP blamed the conservative voters for staying home and not voting for a candidate they didn't want in the first place.
