FEEDING THE LIONS
By Growltiger*
A little boy and his mother were watching a film about Romans feeding Christians to the lions when the little boy began to sob.
"Don't cry, darling," the mother consoled. "It's only a movie."
"But, Mama," the little boy cried, pointing at the screen. "Look! That little lion in the corner didn't get one."
And so it was two weeks ago when the secular, anti-Christian Democratic media focused on Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act. None of the usual suspects making up the Left's Amen Chorus mentioned that the Indiana legislature and Governor Mike Pence were elected by Indianans to reflect the will of the Indiana electorate. That's how representative government works. Or rather, how representative government used to work. In 21st century America, if a group can claim past discrimination against his group at any time in America no matter how long ago, that person or group now has carte blanche to victimize anyone not of or in that particular group.
In the Indiana case, the press and LBGT went ballistic over Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act claiming the act might mean same sex couples might not be able to get services for their marriage. So far as anyone knows, this has not happened, but the mere thought that some Christian right-wing Bible thumper baker, florist, caterer or photographer might refuse to bake, flower (sic), cater or photograph a same sex wedding was enough to send the Democratic media into an anti-Republican, anti-Christian frenzy. After all, there is an election coming up in 2016, and those who might stall or delay the march of an all-powerful Federal Government with permanent Democrat Party governance must be silenced.
The brouhaha that erupted over Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act gave new meaning to the term--religious conviction. It was time to feed the lions. And this time, all the lions got a Christian--especially George Stephanopoulos who took a bite out of Indiana's governor, Mike Pence, a possible contender for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.
It is telling that none of the reporters beating the bushes for Christians and Republicans to serve as raw meat for the lions asked why any sane same sex couple would want their wedding cake baked by a bakery who disapproved of their marriage. Sort of like asking the dowdy ex who put you through business school whom you dumped when you became CEO of Huge Business Inc to photograph your wedding to your new trophy wife. Or maybe asking Saudi Arabia and Iran to co-host the next women's and gay rights convention in Israel?
Adding to the hysteria, a reporter from a local ABC affiliate (Stephanopoulos works for ABC, too) waltzed into Memories Pizza in Walkerton, Indiana, known for its Christian religiosity, and asked one of the owners whether Memories Pizza would cater a same sex wedding (1). Note that the reporter wasn't asking Memories Pizza to cater his or her wedding nor had any same sex couple complained that the establishment had refused to cater their wedding; it was just another gotcha question the establishment media serves up to their fellow Democrats' political enemies. Also note that the reporter did not approach a Muslim business with the same question; Islam being less accommodating to homosexuality than Christianity.
Unfortunately, the Memories Pizza owner naively walked into the trap and answered honestly instead of laughing and asking the trouble-making reporter when was the last time a pizza parlor catered a wedding.
To be fair, Indiana's Governor Pence, a professional politician, fell for it, too; and he should have known better than to respond to Stephanopoulos (a former Democratic advisor's) question asking him whether the Religious Freedom Restoration Act granted permission for Christians opposed to same sex marriage to discriminate against homosexuals. Instead of letting Boy George back him into a corner, Pence should have simply said, "no" and sat back to enjoy watching the "impartial" television journalist scramble for another gotcha question.
One of the great conundrums in our contentious times is why Christians, Republicans, Conservatives and Libertarians haven't caught on to the fact that when they are being interviewed by a member of the "mainstream" media, they are being interviewed by a political opponent. Would Governor Pence agree to be interviewed by Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer or Harry Reid? If not, why would he agree to be interviewed by former Clinton political advisor Stephanopoulos? Did he really think Mr. Stephanopoulos would be fair? If so, he is too naive to be President of the United States.
An even bigger puzzlement is why those who are opposed to the various hot button issues of our time feel obligated to take a stand or make their case when they know their views will be attacked, belittled, marginalized, their businesses boycotted, their livelihood and sometimes their lives threatened. Why editorialize? If a caterer, photographer, florist or baker has religious reasons for not wishing to cater, photograph, flower (sic) or bake a cake for a same sex wedding, why not simply say "Sorry, we're all booked up that day?" We have not yet reached the point where a business has no right to lose money in service to their ideals. Or have we?
