GLASS HOUSES
By Growltiger*
American and British media make no bones about what a bad guy is President Vladimir Putin. Not only has Vlad the Impaler annexed Crimea, he's about to annex Eastern Ukraine. This makes Britain and America look bad because in 1994, both countries signed a treaty to protect Ukraine if Ukraine would give up its nukes. But that was then and this is now. Then Ukraine was the world's third largest nuclear power, now fifteen years later, they have no nukes, Russia is on its border and America graciously sent their fighters some meals ready to eat. (1)Vlad doesn't only meddle in foreign policy, he might also have had something to do with the deaths of reporter Anna Politkovskaya, former Federal Security Service officer Alexander Litvinenko and, more recently, Boris Nemtsov, who was gunned down on the streets of Moscow. Russian security has detained two suspects in the Nemtsov murder (2), but the media are skeptical. Keep in mind, these are the same media who believed: "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor", "I heard about the IRS targeting conservative groups from the media", "I learned about the Secretary of State's private emails when everybody else did", "Fast and Furious was a Bush era program", "Benghazi was a protest against a YouTube video," etc., etc., etc. The Russian President has a history of using his government to intimidate his political opponents. Like Democratic Senator Robert Mendez who has been quite vocal about his opposition to the President's policies on Cuba and Iran. Senator Mendez now finds himself under investigation for corruption by the Department of Justice. (3) Whoa! Strike that! Wrong President. Wrong country. Mikhail Khordorkovsky, former head of the oil company, Yukos, accused Mr. Putin of corruption, and, for his trouble, went to jail for tax evasion and fraud. As Emily Litella would say, "Never Mind". (4)The President also used his security agency to listen in on his citizens' phone calls. If that wasn't bad enough, the agency also snooped on European leaders' phones. Oops. Messed up again. Wrong NSA. Never mind. When Vlad became president in 2000, he immediately began railing against Wall Street -- I mean, the Russian oligarchs --and set out to curb their power and influence on politics and in the media. (5) His Justice Department got a warrant to monitor Fox News reporter, James Rosen's, e-mails (6) and even snooped into Mr. Rosen's parents' phone calls. Whoops. Not Rosen! I meant to write Gusinksy. Vladimir Gusinsky worked for NTV, not Fox News, and when he refused to change his editorial policy, he was charged with fraud. Mr. Gusinksy now resides outside his country as does Edward Snowden. (7). See Wrong NSA above.Gusinksy wasn't the only presidential critic to find himself in hot water with the law. Conservative political commentator Dinesh D'Souza was convicted of violating election law (8). Strike that one, too. Alexei Navalny, a Russian blogger, was convicted of embezzlement (5); Dinesh violated election law.Sharyl Attkisson, (9) -- make that Ksenia Sobchak -- was a familiar face on CBS, Russian TV. Now she only appears on Fox News, -- Dozhd, (a liberal channel that is a refuge for several dissident journalists). "Mr. Putin makes little secret of his hostility to journalists who challenge his authority" (5). So, to sum up: Media Magnate, Boris Berezovsky, is dead; Oligarch, Mikhail Khordorkovsky, is in jail for tax evasion; Sergei Udaltsov is charged with incitement to mass disorder; and David Petraeus, has reached a plea deal with the DOJ (10) for providing classified documents to his mistress who at the time had military security clearance but since has been stripped of same (11). Sources:(1) Ukraine's nukes(2) Suspects Detained in Moscow Murder(3) DOJ expected to charge Senator Mendez(4) Emily Litella was a character created by Gilda Radner for Saturday Night Live. She played a news commentator who was a little deaf and always got things mixed up. When corrected by the host, she'd look chagrined and say "never mind."(5) The Fates of Putin's Enemies(6) James Rosen(7) NSA whistleblower would like to go to Switzerland(8) Obama Critic Spared Prison(9) Sharyl Attkisson(10) General Petraeus(11) Paula Broadwell----
