ABOUT JOINING ISIS

By Chuck MacNab

There's a lot of news talk about people, especially young girls, who travel to the Middle East to join the radical Islamists known as ISIS. Since these individuals are obviously unaware of the circumstances to which they are submitting themselves, they should be provided information that will enable them to exercise better judgment about what they are getting themselves into.

As a matter of background, I have lived in the Middle East in areas where many of the Islamic radicals come from, so am familiar first hand with the culture and especially the living conditions among these people. They are primitive and a long way from what is familiar and certainly acceptable to middle class westerners, especially females, who may naively believe they can tolerate the conditions that will be imposed upon them.

A way to combat the urge that many people may have to join ISIS should be a widespread educational program in schools and churches to provide people, especially young people, the facts about daily life in underdeveloped areas like the Middle East. How do the people who live there deal with the routine of daily life from a practical perspective? The reality is that many people, especially females, die at an early age of all manner of diseases, especially social diseases, because there is virtually no health care. Health care of almost any kind is limited to those with high status among the population.

Young girls are tolerated, as compared to the rest of the female population, with more attention as long as they "produce" and are attractive to males. The culture encourages virtual slavery, in some cases ACTUAL slavery, and the selling and "loaning" of human beings for sexual pleasure or reproductive purposes. If individuals, usually children or females, become "troublesome" or are no longer considered useful, their "owners" strap explosive vests on them for the purpose of killing enemies. The food is unpalatable; people live in deplorable housing with dirt floors and poor sanitation. Everyone ("elites" excepted) is subject to cultural decisions that put their lives in jeopardy. In other words, you may be a friend one day and an enemy the next.

An essential component of freedom is INFORMING, but NOT PREVENTING, people from doing stupid things. Of course, some laws are needed in an organized society but one exception would be preventing office holders from engaging in
"they know better than we do" legislation.

In our view, those who have the opportunity to be fully informed should have to live with the consequences of their decisions. After informing them of the facts, we need to encourage people who may have an interest in joining the radical Islamists to take a hard look at what they may be subjecting themselves to. It may be politically incorrect to suggest this to the Obama Administration, but if individuals still decide it is for them to become traitors to their country, we should provide one-way transportation to the Islamic radical controlled area of their choice and then revoke their right to return.
