Prior to  2003, Iraq was functioning perfectly normally for a Middle Eastern Muslim majority nation. It had it's president for life (Saddam Hussein), oil revenue, and a testy relationship with its neighbors. What could be more normal? And then George W. Bush showed up like a skunk at a garden party. For some reason, in the middle of retaliating against Afghanistan for that country's government sheltering the terrorist who engineered the murder of 3,000 Americans on 9-11, President Bush decided the Iraqi people, who'd never known nor shown any inclination toward democracy, deserved a shot at it. So shot at it, he did. With missiles, rockets, bombs and explosions only rivaled by a Muslim protest against videos and cartoons outside an American or Danish embassy.

Never underestimate a Republican politician's ability to shoot off his toes even when his revolver is stuck in its holster, and Bush's blunder gave the American media the opportunity they'd been waiting for. For the next five years, the press pounded him with the same intensity he'd pounded Iraq, subjecting the American people to such unrelenting negativity that the Democrats could have run Jimmy Carter, and he'd have been elected.

Elected on a promise to get America out of Iraq, Barack Obama kept his word and withdrew. But he barely had time to refocus on keeping his other promise -- changing America -- before the Arab spring sprang. Tunisia exploded; Egypt erupted; Libya detonated; Syria threw a civil war--the Syrian president for life using the WMD nobody mentioned he had. The Muslim Brotherhood won the Egyptian election and changed the Constitution proving the Middle East's version of democracy (one man one vote one time); the Egyptian army ousted the Brotherhood president; Turkey which is rapidly Islamicizing protested; the Libyan rebels attacked the American embassy and killed four Americans in gratitude for America's help in taking out their former and late president for life, Qaddafi. In the meantime the
reset button with Russia got fried when Putin grabbed Crimea and moved troops to the border with Ukraine. A militant Islamic group (is there any other kind) in Nigeria kidnapped 300 girls igniting a "Bring Back Our Girls" campaign on Twitter. Not to be left out, Hamas shot off rockets at Israel; Israel retaliated by blowing up Hamas's rocket launchers which happened to be in schools, hospitals and private homes, and that unleashed a barrage of anti-Semitism not seen in Europe since the 1930's (well disguised as anti-Israeli, of course). An army of  impoverished, unaccompanied children from Honduras, San Salvador and Guatemala paid up to $10,000.00/head to  coyotes to escort them into the United States hopefully in time to vote in the next election; an Ebola epidemic erupted in West Africa causing the CDC to put out warnings to pay no attention to the disease behind the curtain but if it shows up in the ER to call them right away. Oh, and by the way, a group of Islamic radicals calling themselves ISIS took over part of Syria and Iraq and set up what they call the new Caliphate whereupon they began crucifying or beheading Christians and Muslims who didn't agree with their 7th century ideology.

Meanwhile, President Obama has had to send fighter jets from the USS George H.W.Bush into Iraq to prevent ISIS from taking Erbil and slaughtering the Kurds. Conservatives and Republicans criticizing the President for coming too late to the ISIS dance need to keep in mind that while President Obama's foreign policy leaves much to be desired, this could not have been an easy decision for a president who is as opposed to the American military as any Sixties Vietnam War protester ever was.
