Legislative Committee to Hold Hearing for Community Development Partnership Act

MACDC is gearing up for the June 1st hearing of its signature bill, The Community Development Partnership Act  (S.1427/ H.988), before the Joint Committee on Community Development and Small Business.  MACDC members Massachusetts State Houseare submitting letters of support as are members of their communities -- small businesses, residents, and other members -- showcasing how this bill will support the important work that community members are doing.  A number of key partners and intermediaries are expected to testify in support of The Community Development Partnership Act.

 

One CDC Executive Director writes "the bill will help community residents, local businesses and other stakeholders develop and implement locally devised strategies that meet the needs and take advantage of the opportunities of their specific local context."

MACDC's Blog Making Connections

The Community Development Innovation Forum has helped to spur numerous efforts to expand and deepen collaboration with the goal of improving effectiveness and efficiency in the sector. With the help of new funding from Citi and Bank of America, MACDC is now leading a major planning effort to explore the efficacy and viability of a statewide partnership among CDCs and others who provide technical assistance to local entrepreneurs.

The Alliance - Advancing Community Development by Confronting Racism 

On April 29th, The Alliance participated in the YWCA's Stand Against Racism, by holding its own event, at Boston Private Bank, which featured a viewing and discussion of the powerful DVD, Race - The Power of an IllusionThis is a must see documentary for anyone in Community Development.  Look for more screenings and discussions hosted by the Alliance over the summer.  If your organization is interested in hosting a viewing and discussion of Race - The Power of an Illusion please contact Rosa Nin, rosan@macdc.org.  Facilitators are available if you are interested.

 

The Alliance is a coalition of community development organizations and practitioners dedicated to increasing the racial and ethnic diversity of leadership of the community development field by addressing racism.

Mel King Institute for Community Building 

The Mel King Institute hosts trainings and sponsors events which bring community development professionals and volunteers the skills they need to be effective in their positions in the community.  The following are two highlighted events coming up soon:

 

Small Business Financial Analysis: A New Tool for Small Business Technical Assistance Providers
Monday, June 6, 2011; 10am-2pm
Babson College: Olin Hall, Needham Wellesley Room

This training will offer participants the opportunity to learn how to use a new excel spreadsheet tool that has been developed specifically for small business technical assistance providers. The tool is a business analysis and strategic planning tool that providers can use to guide their emerging business clients through the process of developing a strategic plan for sustainable growth.  The tool calculates 3 years of financial statement data, balance sheets and income statements and provides a range of analysis and planning functions.

Mel King Institute 2nd Anniversary Breakfast

Please join the Mel King Institute for its Second Anniversary Celebration.  The program will include highlights and reflections on past success, as well as upcoming plans for the future.  The keynote speaker will be Marie Kennedy of UMass Boston and UCLA, with introductory comments by Mel King.
