Thanks to everyone who attended the East Atlanta Strut Music & Arts Festival on Saturday. We hope you enjoyed it.
Inaugural EACA Community Appreciation Picnic
We appreciate all that our residents and neighbors do for our community. To show our thanks, this picnic is for you!

Join us this Saturday, October 4, in Brownwood Park for The Art of Good Mural Painting Block Party and Community Appreciation Day. In partnership with the East Atlanta Kids Club and Allstate, the Art of Good Mural project will start in the morning and the EACA picnic follows in the afternoon (noon to 4:00 p.m.). There will be barbecue and a band, so bring a chair and a blanket. And a side to share if you like.

Nominate your neighbor, or someone who contributes to the well-being of our neighborhood, for one of the soon-to-be prestigious Community Appreciation Awards. Nominate your neighbor here before September 29. Winners will receive a certificate and a token of our appreciation.

Brownwood Park Stewardship Sunday

Here's another chance to help beautify your neighborhood park!

Brownwood Park Stewardship Sunday will be held on Sunday, October 5, from 9:00 a.m. until noon.

Please join us for a great opportunity to work with your neighbors to make Brownwood Park even more beautiful. We will be planting flowers and plants at the south end of Brownwood Park at the entrance facing Ormewood Avenue. Please meet by the mural at whatever time you are available. Please bring your favorite work gloves, small digging tools, and your own refreshment.

Please contact [email protected] with questions.
Thank You from the Friends of East Atlanta Library

The Friends of East Atlanta Library (FEAL) would like to extend a BIG thank you to all who came out to the Book Sale Saturday during the Strut. All of the money raised goes to fund library programming. It was a great day! Please hold on to any books you may want to donate; we will accept book donations again in a few months.

Please mark your calendars for Friday, October 24, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. FEAL will be having our annual meeting that is open to the community. We will be featuring a local awarding-winning author, Mr. David Fulmer, and live jazz from local artist Tom Marnell. FEAL will also be serving wine and finger foods. This is a FREE event! More details will be available soon.

We would also like to give a big thanks to our October programming sponsor, East Atlanta Village Fitness

Dog Festival Returns to East Atlanta Village

East Atlanta animal lovers and local business owners came together last year for a common purpose: to celebrate dogs, promote responsible pet ownership, and raise money for local rescue organizations.

Thanks to overwhelming community support, the inaugural Dogtoberfest in EAV was a huge success, attracting more than 300 dogs and 500 people. An even bigger turnout is expected at this year's event, which will be held from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19 in the East Atlanta Village Farmers Market space at 561 Flat Shoals Avenue.

This dog- and family-friendly event offers a Halloween costume contest for dogs, low-cost microchipping, dog massage demos, vendor booths featuring local businesses and artists, story time for kids, yummy treats (for humans and dogs), and raffle drawings for a wide variety of prizes. And - of course - a parade of adoptable dogs from various rescue groups will help those who might be looking for a new best friend. The entrance fee is $5 per dog.

East Atlanta Village residents Lauren Janis of Big Daddy Biscuits and Morieka Johnson of Soulpup.com founded the event last year, and they decided to do things a little differently this time when determining which group would benefit from the event proceeds. Local rescue groups submitted an application for the 2014 Dogtoberfest in EAV grant. Proceeds from this year's event will go to the winning organization, Pitties in the City.

If you would like to get on board as a sponsor, vendor, raffle contributor, or volunteer, please contact [email protected]. More information can be found on the Dogtoberfest in EAV Facebook page. Until then, mark your calendar, and start working on your dog's Halloween costume.

New EAV Farmers Market Hours

Continuing through autumn, the East Atlanta Village Farmers Market hours will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Open every Thursday through December 18, the market is located at 561 Flat Shoals Ave across the street from the Midway Pub.

Be sure to come by early and stock up on the best produce, meats, cheeses, breads and other tasty treats!

Berea Mennonite Church Pumpkin Sale

Berea Mennonite Church is hosting a pumpkin patch again this year. The church is located at 1088 Bouldercrest Drive.

Stop in and see the farm while you buy your pumpkins and gourds. Say hello to the sheep, goats, chickens, pig and emu (long story). Come on weekends for hot cider and s'mores over the bonfire. More than 85 percent of the proceeds will go to either the Oakleaf Mennonite Farm or the Navajo Nation.

Haastoberfest Block Party

The 3rd Annual Haastoberfest Block Party will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014

Haas Ave SE between Metropolitan Pl SE ("the point") and Metropolitan Ave SE will be closed for the event. Only one block of Haas Ave SE will be closed, which should not impact traffic flows through the neighborhood. The street will be closed from noon to 7:00 p.m.

The goal of the block party is to bring the neighborhood together to help foster relationships and get to know the people who live nearby.
EAV Beautification Day on Nov. 15

There is one more EACA-sponsored opportunity this year to contribute to the beauty of the Village! Please join us Saturday, November 15, as we prepare for the East Atlanta Santa.

Details:
  • Meet at 10:00 a.m. at the intersection of Flat Shoals Ave. and Glenwood Ave.
  • Rain day is the following day (announcement will be made).
  • Please bring gear to protect yourself (gloves, hat, eyewear, sunblock, etc.).
  • Pruning may also be necessary, so if you have pruning tools that would be helpful too.
Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you then!

Friday Food for Firefighters

It's always a great time to deliver a meal to our local

firefighters, and it has been a little while since they have had a visit!

Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The firefighters request food without pork. A full kitchen is available to them at the fire station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5:00 - 5:30 p.m.

Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals. You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends--one or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant at 404-455-8746 for information or with questions.

East Atlanta Security Patrol

With fall arriving, be aware that this normally begins our worst time of the year for crime.  Please consider joining the East Atlanta Security Patrol (EASP) and helping to make our community safer. One of the most important member benefits is that more members in your area results in more frequent patrols by our officers, which is why you should encourage your neighbors to join the EASP too.  Membership for the upcoming October-December quarter closes in a couple days, so this is also a good time to "recruit" a neighbor as a new member.  More members also means extra patrols during Thanksgiving and Christmas when a lot of people are traveling.   And membership enables your household to receive extra patrols anytime you are traveling.

The EASP hires off-duty city of Atlanta police officers to patrol the neighborhood in order to supplement the APD officers assigned to the area. EASP officers have full police powers, are in uniform and carry a gun, but unlike on-duty officers, never leave East Atlanta to answer an emergency call. They are paid by our community, and patrol only in East Atlanta. It is very common for on duty officers to leave their beat in East Atlanta to go into neighboring communities to respond to calls dispatched by the 911 call center, making the presence of the EASP officers even more critical.

EASP officers are not on duty 24/7, they work during the hours where major crime is most likely to occur and response times for the police can be very slow. Whether you live on Gresham, Pasley or Metropolitan, you can expect the officers to respond to your call within 3-5 minutes when they are on duty. The EASP does not require that you be a member to call.  However, to best utilize the EASP, we request that you always call 911 first if you need an immediate police response, then call the EASP.  While calling 911 would seem to be sufficient, many 911 calls not dispatched right away if no on duty officer is available, and the EASP officer won't know to respond unless you make a second call to us at 404-954-1568.

In addition to proactive patrols in our community, the EASP works closely with APD and other Security Patrols to share information about crime threats or new patterns of crime. When appropriate, we share this information with the community via our website, Facebook and Twitter. We also post weekly crime reports and share other information that we feel will benefit the community.

If you have additional questions, please direct them to [email protected], call the EASP at 404-954-1568, or visit easecuritypatrol.com.
