The East Atlanta Strut Music & Arts Festival is this Saturday, September 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Don't miss it!
Take Your Street to the Street at the Strut Parade

The East Atlanta Strut Parade, the wackiest and most fun parade in East Atlanta, has opened its call for entries. This year the parade is urging groups of neighbors to show off pride in their streets by joining the parade, which starts at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, at Glenwood and Patterson Avenues.

Parade organizers recognize that neighbors on many streets have bonded. From neighborhood watch groups to block parties like May on May and Haastoberfest, East Atlantans have raised the profile of their little parts of the neighborhood. The Strut is challenging these groups to rep their 'hood even more, by marching under their street's sign in the Strut Parade.

The parade is also a great way to mark a birthday or other special occasion. Register under the Celebration category, grab some friends, make a sign, don some decorations and hit the road!

Other Parade categories are: Band, Pets, Kids, Classic/Art car or truck, Scooter/Bicycle or Anything Goes. (Street groups should choose Anything Goes!)

Winners in the various parade categories will take home a coveted Strut Parade trophy, which are works of folk art. This year there will also be a grand prize winner that will take home $100 in gift certificates to East Atlanta Village businesses.

Friends of East Atlanta Library Upcoming Events

Hopefully you know by now that the Friends of East Atlanta Library will hold their book sale Saturday, September 27, from noon to 4:00 p.m. during the East Atlanta Strut. Please come out and make this sale a success by purchasing books. All proceeds from the sale fund library programming and materials. Our library needs your support now more than ever as the Fulton County Commissioners are considering additional cuts to the library budget.

The library can also use your support by volunteering! We are in need of strong backs for set-up and clean-up of the book sale. Set-up begins at 10:00 a.m. and clean-up is at 4:00 p.m. All volunteers can pick out free books to take home. Please email friendsofeal@gmail.com if you can help with the sale.

The book sale will take place on the plaza outside of the East Atlanta Library. Thousands of books will be for sale! All books are $1 for paperbacks and $2 for hardbacks. The Friends of East Atlanta Library will also be looking to liquidate their inventory, so a special section of books will be sold at $7 per bag. Book shoppers should park on the streets near the library to stash your purchases before enjoying all the events of the Strut Festival. The Strut book sale is one of four quarterly sales hosted by the Friends of East Atlanta Library. The next sale will be held in conjunction with a holiday bake sale on December 6. In case of rain, look for the sale inside the library meeting room.

Inaugural EACA Community Appreciation Picnic
We appreciate all that our residents and neighbors do for our community. To show our thanks, this picnic is for you!

Join us Saturday, October 4, in Brownwood Park for The Art of Good Mural Painting Block Party and Community Appreciation Day. In partnership with the East Atlanta Kids Club and Allstate, the Art of Good Mural project will start in the morning and the EACA picnic follows in the afternoon (noon to 4:00 p.m.). There will be barbecue and a band, so bring a chair and a blanket. And a side to share if you like.

Nominate your neighbor, or someone who contributes to the well-being of our neighborhood, for one of the soon-to-be prestigious Community Appreciation Awards. Nominate your neighbor here before September 29. Winners will receive a certificate and a token of our appreciation.

Brownwood Park Stewardship Sunday

Here's another chance to help beautify your neighborhood park!

Brownwood Park Stewardship Sunday will be held on Sunday, October 5, from 9:00 a.m. until noon.

Please join us for a great opportunity to work with your neighbors to make Brownwood Park even more beautiful. We will be planting flowers and plants at the south end of Brownwood Park at the entrance facing Ormewood Avenue. Please meet by the mural at whatever time you are available. Please bring your favorite work gloves, small digging tools, and your own refreshment.

Please contact parks@eaca.net with questions.

EAV Runfest Races

In partnership with the East Atlanta Strut, the Burgess-Peterson Academy PTA and EAV Runfest will be bringing back the 5K and adding additional races to a full day of our first annual EAV Runfest! We will be kicking off the Strut with a bang! Stick around after the race for activities for the whole family.

The East Atlanta Village will host this festival of races, consisting of three separate USATF certified courses - the 5K, 2-mile and 1-mile competitive - and will take place in conjunction with the 16th Annual East Atlanta Strut Music & Arts Festival on September 27, 2014

EAV Runfest will benefit the children of Burgess-Peterson Academy, a traditional Atlanta public elementary school serving students pre-K through fifth grade. Fundraising efforts are crucial to implementing new programs, providing new equipment and supplementing the already stellar academic programs. Some examples of needs to be met with the help of your participation are teacher grants, Media Center upgrades, and enhancement of wellness programs, to name a few.

Crowning Overall Champions

This will be one of the only running events in Atlanta where participants are able to race multiple times and compete in an overall time competition. Awards will be presented on one of the main concert stages during the festival.

One Mile Challenge!

The highlight of the day will be a competitive one mile race around Brownwood Park. Athletes of all ranges hoping to run from 4 to 6 minute miles will have the opportunity to let it all hang out!

EAV Runfest is owned by Endurahub LLC and produced by SetUp Events, an established race production company responsible for organizing successful athletic events from 5k's to triathlons. Their expertise in the field of race production and event organization will provide a professional race environment with official timing and race results.

Dog Festival Returns to East Atlanta Village

East Atlanta animal lovers and local business owners came together last year for a common purpose: to celebrate dogs, promote responsible pet ownership, and raise money for local rescue organizations.

Thanks to overwhelming community support, the inaugural Dogtoberfest in EAV was a huge success, attracting more than 300 dogs and 500 people. An even bigger turnout is expected at this year's event, which will be held from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19 in the East Atlanta Village Farmers Market space at 561 Flat Shoals Avenue.

This dog- and family-friendly event offers a Halloween costume contest for dogs, low-cost microchipping, dog massage demos, vendor booths featuring local businesses and artists, story time for kids, yummy treats (for humans and dogs), and raffle drawings for a wide variety of prizes. And - of course - a parade of adoptable dogs from various rescue groups will help those who might be looking for a new best friend. The entrance fee is $5 per dog.

East Atlanta Village residents Lauren Janis of Big Daddy Biscuits and Morieka Johnson of Soulpup.com founded the event last year, and they decided to do things a little differently this time when determining which group would benefit from the event proceeds. Local rescue groups submitted an application for the 2014 Dogtoberfest in EAV grant. Proceeds from this year's event will go to the winning organization, Pitties in the City.

If you would like to get on board as a sponsor, vendor, raffle contributor, or volunteer, please contact dogtoberfesteav@gmail.com. More information can be found on the Dogtoberfest in EAV Facebook page. Until then, mark your calendar, and start working on your dog's Halloween costume.

Proposed Mural Project for Brownwood Park

The East Atlanta Kids Club (EAKC) is seeking community input on a proposed mural project for Brownwood Park.

EAKC is working with a local artist and a media group to support the youth in our after-school program (and others in the East Atlanta community) to design, paint and install a mural with the theme of "Doing Good In Your Community."

The mural is planned to be installed along a fence line in the north end of the park. The mural could be installed temporarily or permanently, if the community is in favor of the project.

With this is mind, EAKC is seeking community and city input on, participation in, and approval for the mural project. Please click here to learn more about the project.

Haastoberfest Block Party

The 3rd Annual Haastoberfest Block Party will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014

Haas Ave SE between Metropolitan Pl SE ("the point") and Metropolitan Ave SE will be closed for the event. Only one block of Haas Ave SE will be closed, which should not impact traffic flows through the neighborhood. The street will be closed from noon to 7:00 p.m.

The goal of the block party is to bring the neighborhood together to help foster relationships and get to know the people who live nearby.
Great Atlanta Pollinator Project

Log your garden in with the Greater Atalanta Pollinator Project, let's show those other neighborhoods what we are about!

The goal of the Greater Atlanta Pollinator Partnership (GAPP), is to create and restore viable pollinator habitats around Atlanta for butterflies, bees, moths, bats, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects and animals.

GAPP estimates that there are nearly 1.2 million acres of potential pollinator habitat within a 25 mile radius of downtown Atlanta! We need your help to create and restore these spaces into great pollinator gardens.

With the involvement of program partners and hundreds of thousands of Georgia's citizens, we can help to spread the word about pollinators, pollinator conservation, and pollinator gardens in Atlanta.

Already have a pollinator garden established? Then head over here to register your green space on our "GAPP map" and become part of the GAPP team!

Ultimately, the success of the program depends on your responding to our call for action! Learn how to start your pollinator garden here.

Friday Food for Firefighters

It's always a great time to deliver a meal to our local

firefighters, and it has been a little while since they have had a visit!

Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The firefighters request food without pork. A full kitchen is available to them at the fire station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5:00 - 5:30 p.m.

Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals. You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends--one or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant at 404-455-8746 for information or with questions.
