Take Your Street to the Street at the Strut Parade
|

The East Atlanta Strut Parade, the wackiest and most fun parade in East Atlanta, has opened its call for entries. This year the parade is urging groups of neighbors to show off pride in their streets by joining the parade, which starts at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, at Glenwood and Patterson Avenues.
Parade organizers recognize that neighbors on many streets have bonded. From neighborhood watch groups to block parties like May on May and Haastoberfest, East Atlantans have raised the profile of their little parts of the neighborhood. The Strut is challenging these groups to rep their 'hood even more, by marching under their street's sign in the Strut Parade.
The parade is also a great way to mark a birthday or other special occasion. Register under the Celebration category, grab some friends, make a sign, don some decorations and hit the road!
Other Parade categories are: Band, Pets, Kids, Classic/Art car or truck, Scooter/Bicycle or Anything Goes. (Street groups should choose Anything Goes!)
Winners in the various parade categories will take home a coveted Strut Parade trophy, which are works of folk art. This year there will also be a grand prize winner that will take home $100 in gift certificates to East Atlanta Village businesses.

Friends of East Atlanta Library Upcoming Events
|

On Saturday, September 20, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Friends of East Atlanta Library welcome you to attend an artist reception for Joy Hartsfield featuring a showing of her work. The artist will be demonstrating creative brushwork, inviting attendees to join in the fun and relaxation that art can bring. Her art which will also be on display features animals, insects, and expressive brushstrokes and shapes in an array of drawn, painted and collage work. The colors range from vibrant, to soft and delicate. Ms. Hartsfield is known in Atlanta for her unusual art work as well as her famous uncle, Mayor William B, Hartsfield. Refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public. Ms. Hartsfield's work will be on display on the library's gallery wall through October 15 during library hours.
The Friends of East Atlanta Library will hold their quarterly book sale Saturday, September 27, from noon to 4:00 p.m. during the East Atlanta Strut. The book sale will take place on the plaza just outside the East Atlanta Library. Thousands of books will be for sale!
All books are $1 for paperbacks and $2 for hardbacks. The Friends of East Atlanta Library will also be looking to liquidate their inventory, so a special section of books will be sold at $7 per bag. Book shoppers should park on the streets near the library to stash your purchases before enjoying the Strut Festival. All proceeds from the sale fund library programming and materials. The Strut book sale is one of four quarterly sales the Friends of East Atlanta Library host. The next sale will be held in conjunction with a holiday bake sale on December 6. In case of rain, look for the sale inside the library meeting room.

Dog Festival Returns to East Atlanta Village
|

East Atlanta animal lovers and local business owners came together last year for a common purpose: to celebrate dogs, promote responsible pet ownership, and raise money for local rescue organizations.
Thanks to overwhelming community support, the inaugural Dogtoberfest in EAV was a huge success, attracting more than 300 dogs and 500 people. An even bigger turnout is expected at this year's event, which will be held from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19 in the East Atlanta Village Farmers Market space at 561 Flat Shoals Avenue.
This dog- and family-friendly event offers a Halloween costume contest for dogs, low-cost microchipping, dog massage demos, vendor booths featuring local businesses and artists, story time for kids, yummy treats (for humans and dogs), and raffle drawings for a wide variety of prizes. And - of course - a parade of adoptable dogs from various rescue groups will help those who might be looking for a new best friend. The entrance fee is $5 per dog.
East Atlanta Village residents Lauren Janis of Big Daddy Biscuits and Morieka Johnson of Soulpup.com founded the event last year, and they decided to do things a little differently this time when determining which group would benefit from the event proceeds. Local rescue groups submitted an application for the 2014 Dogtoberfest in EAV grant. Proceeds from this year's event will go to the winning organization, Pitties in the City.
If you would like to get on board as a sponsor, vendor, raffle contributor, or volunteer, please contact dogtoberfesteav@gmail.com. More information can be found on the Dogtoberfest in EAV Facebook page. Until then, mark your calendar, and start working on your dog's Halloween costume.

Proposed Mural Project for Brownwood Park
|
The East Atlanta Kids Club (EAKC) is seeking community input on a proposed mural project for Brownwood Park.
EAKC is working with a local artist and a media group to support the youth in our after-school program (and others in the East Atlanta community) to design, paint and install a mural with the theme of "Doing Good In Your Community."
The mural is planned to be installed along a fence line in the north end of the park. The mural could be installed temporarily or permanently, if the community is in favor of the project.
With this is mind, EAKC is seeking community and city input on, participation in, and approval for the mural project.
Please click here to learn more about the project, which will also be discussed at the upcoming EACA meeting on September 9.

Great Atlanta Pollinator Project
|
Log your garden in with the Greater Atalanta Pollinator Project, let's show those other neighborhoods what we are about!
The goal of the Greater Atlanta Pollinator Partnership (GAPP), is to create and restore viable pollinator habitats around Atlanta for butterflies, bees, moths, bats, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects and animals.
GAPP estimates that there are nearly 1.2 million acres of potential pollinator habitat within a 25 mile radius of downtown Atlanta! We need your help to create and restore these spaces into great pollinator gardens.
With the involvement of program partners and hundreds of thousands of Georgia's citizens, we can help to spread the word about pollinators, pollinator conservation, and pollinator gardens in Atlanta.
Already have a pollinator garden established? Then head over here to register your green space on our "GAPP map" and become part of the GAPP team!

ARC Regional Plan Survey - Your Input Needed
|
The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) is conducting an online survey to find out how people would like to see our region develop over the next 25 years. The results of this survey will help to inform ARC's comprehensive Regional Plan, including topics like transportation, land use, workforce development, digital innovation, aging, health and overall quality of life.
Click here to take the survey (ends September 30). It's an important opportunity for the community to have an impact on this regional vision. Please share this survey with your contacts, friends and family to help guarantee that as many voices are heard from the community as possible.

Friday Food for Firefighters
|

It's always a great time to deliver a meal to our local
firefighters, and it has been a little while since they have had a visit!
Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The firefighters request food without pork. A full kitchen is available to them at the fire station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5:00 - 5:30 p.m.
Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals. You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends--one or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.
Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant at 404-455-8746 for information or with questions.
