Volunteers needed this Sunday to help with
beautification in Brownwood Park. More details below.
August Frolic in Brownwood Park

If the Dog Days of summer have got you down, join us for a refreshing splash at Brownwood Park! On Sunday, August 24, we will set up a plethora of pools to splash away in. We are firing up the grills for a good ol'fashioned cookout so bring a dinner for you and your family. The pool party starts at 2:00 p.m. Hope to see you there! (and don't forget your towel!)

Also on a side note:

Needed for Maynard Jackson High School Football Program: One freezer chest for the training/locker room. New or used in good working condition. Coaches will arrange for pickup. Please call MHJHS at 404-802-5200.
Volunteer Day in Brownwood Park

Please come out this Sunday, August 24, at 10:00 a.m. to help with maintenance and beautification in your neighborhood park.

Please bring gloves, shovels, wheelbarrows, etc., and your drink of choice to keep hydrated while getting to know your neighbors.
Benefit for Neighbor in Need East Lake

Neighbor in Need East Atlanta's sister organization, Neighbor in Need East Lake, will hold a benefit concert on Sunday, August 24, at Eddie's Attic in Decatur featuring the Deja Bluegrass Band with two of the Blind Boys of Alabama, Jimmy Carter and Ricky McKinnieTickets are available at www.eddiesattic.com

The Neighbor In Need mission is to help low-income elderly living in the communities of East Lake, Kirkwood, Edgewood, East Atlanta, and Decatur's Oakhurst Community make emergency home repairs. Repairs can include heating and cooling, plumbing, electrical, roofing, and light construction such as repairs to soffit, sheetrock, porches, flooring, etc. Basically, Neighbor in Need tries to tackle anything that degrades the quality of life for the homeowner or devalues the home.

Take Your Street to the Street at the Strut Parade

The East Atlanta Strut Parade, the wackiest and most fun parade in East Atlanta, has opened its call for entries. This year the parade is urging groups of neighbors to show off pride in their streets by joining the parade, which starts at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, at Glenwood and Patterson Avenues.

Parade organizers recognize that neighbors on many streets have bonded. From neighborhood watch groups to block parties like May on May and Haastoberfest, East Atlantans have raised the profile of their little parts of the neighborhood. The Strut is challenging these groups to rep their 'hood even more, by marching under their street's sign in the Strut Parade.

The parade is also a great way to mark a birthday or other special occasion. Register under the Celebration category, grab some friends, make a sign, don some decorations and hit the road!

Other Parade categories are: Band, Pets, Kids, Classic/Art car or truck, Scooter/Bicycle or Anything Goes. (Street groups should choose Anything Goes!)

Winners in the various parade categories will take home a coveted Strut Parade trophy, which are works of folk art. This year there will also be a grand prize winner that will take home $100 in gift certificates to East Atlanta Village businesses.

EAV Runfest Races Coming in September

In partnership with the East Atlanta Strut, the Burgess-Peterson Academy PTA and EAV Runfest will be bringing back the 5K and adding additional races to a full day of our first annual EAV Runfest! We will be kicking off the Strut with a bang! Stick around after the race for activities for the whole family.

The East Atlanta Village will host this festival of races, consisting of three separate USATF certified courses - the 5K, 2-mile and 1-mile competitive - and will take place in conjunction with the 16th Annual East Atlanta Strut Music & Arts Festival on September 27, 2014

EAV Runfest will benefit the children of Burgess-Peterson Academy, a traditional Atlanta public elementary school serving students pre-K through fifth grade. Fundraising efforts are crucial to implementing new programs, providing new equipment and supplementing the already stellar academic programs. Some examples of needs to be met with the help of your participation are teacher grants, Media Center upgrades, and enhancement of wellness programs, to name a few.

Crowning Overall Champions

This will be one of the only running events in Atlanta where participants are able to race multiple times and compete in an overall time competition. Awards will be presented on one of the main concert stages during the festival.

One Mile Challenge!

The highlight of the day will be a competitive one mile race around Brownwood Park. Athletes of all ranges hoping to run from 4 to 6 minute miles will have the opportunity to let it all hang out!

EAV Runfest is owned by Endurahub LLC and produced by SetUp Events, an established race production company responsible for organizing successful athletic events from 5k's to triathlons. Their expertise in the field of race production and event organization will provide a professional race environment with official timing and race results.

For more race details and to register please visit www.runeav.comFor sponsorship opportunities, please see the sponsorship letter as well as available sponsorship levels.
Local Author Shares East Atlanta History

In July, Henry Bryant, who co-authored the book East Atlanta with Katina Van Cronkhite, took the show about the neighborhood to Ohio. He appeared as part of the 150th commemoration of Gen. McPherson's burial in his hometown of Clyde, Ohio on July 29. The program was held at The Clyde Historical Museum, which is located in a historic church building just off Main Street.

Henry is a charter member of EACA and the chair of B*ATL, EAV's own Civil War commemoration group, which is raising money to restore the McPherson and Walker Monuments in the neighborhood.

Friday Food for Firefighters

It's always a great time to deliver a meal to our local

firefighters, and it has been a little while since they have had a visit!

Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The firefighters request food without pork. A full kitchen is available to them at the fire station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5:00 - 5:30 p.m.

Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals. You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends--one or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant at 404-455-8746 for information or with questions.
