Councilmember Archibong Increases Public Safety in East Atlanta

This past week, crews installed four new security cameras in East Atlanta. The cameras, which received funding from District 5 Councilmember Natalyn Archibong, were incorporated into the Atlanta Police Department's Operation Shield Video Integration Center (VIC).

Through the VIC, APD officers have the ability to monitor 24/7 video feeds using state-of-the-art "smart" analytical software, which will both increase crime prevention and assist in incident investigations. An additional camera is planned to be installed in the coming months.

The security cameras are the latest part of an ongoing effort to improve public safety in East Atlanta, which has included increasing lighting on neighborhood streets, increasing police presence on nights and weekends, and establishing a Task Force to improve emergency response times and collaboration between Atlanta and DeKalb County first responders.

B*ATL is only 2 weeks away, July 11-20!

The B*ATL Organization is bringing history alive in and around the city of Atlanta's 5th Council District this year for the sesquicentennial commemoration (150th anninversary) of the Battle of Atlanta. We have been working hard to get the schedule assembled and this year will include everyone's favorite programming as well as some new partners.

Good ole' Abe Lincoln will be back, and you don't want to miss this year's Gala. Our Civil War-to-Civil Rights tent will provide an entertaining dose of history while you wait for your van tour. A morning of storytelling has been arranged in the comfort of the East Atlanta Library. Afterward you can have your photo taken with Lincoln and Scarlett O'Hara. Oh, and don't forget about the 5K race and all of the activity on the front lines.

Follow B*ATL on Facebook to stay up to date with our schedule and any breaking news about B*ATL 2014. Join and help us reach 1,500 likes by July.

Gala tickets are limited. The Gala will kick-off the week of events and will be held at The East Lake Golf Club on Saturday, July 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the historic clubhouse. The gala will feature a cocktail party, dinner, dancing and a silent auction. Tickers are $65 each or $500 for a table of 10. Click here to purchase your tickets.

B*ATL's mission is to preserve the urban battlefield and contribute to a sense of place for the neighborhoods that call it home by engaging residents and visitors to experience our history and the societal transformations that have occurred here. Let us know if you're interested in volunteering at http://www.batlevent.org/enlist.html.

Don't Miss EAVGT's "Went with the Wind" and "Letters Home"

B*ATL presents the East Atlanta Village Guerrilla Theatre (EAVGT) production of Carol Burnett's "Went with the Wind" and an original adaptation "Letters Home."

Two short shows wrapped into an hour of entertainment will take you on an emotional roller coaster. A dramatic description of the Civil War from the ones who lived it is portrayed in EAVGT's original adaptation of the book
Bull Run in their performance "Letters Home." In true East Atlanta style, a comedic ending is provided by EAVGT's rambunctious rendition of the Carol Burnett parody, "Went with the Wind."

EACA 2014 Membership Drive

Thank You EACA members and East Atlanta residents! You did it, you helped us achieve our 2014 membership drive goals. This year EACA has welcomed 150 new and returning members. As we promised, there will be a drawing for an Argosy gift card during the July EACA meeting. You do not have to be present to win. We will notify the winner with the information on record. We exceeded our membership enrollment for 2013, and we feel confident that we met our goal for increasing the diversity of EACA membership. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].

Membership Committee Call for Volunteers

The EACA membership committee is looking for a volunteer to serve as the contact point for the EACA rewards program. We are looking for someone to establish relationships with our current EACA reward participants as well as recruit new EACA reward providers. This program was initiated two years ago to connect EACA members with the businesses and services here in the village. We believe that a vibrant East Atlanta results from our residents being serviced by local businesses. If you are interested, please contact us at [email protected].

EACA Yard Signs Are Coming!

Many EACA members have been asking about the availability of yard signs to show your support for the community. EACA exhausted our inventory of signs last year and we were awaiting the results of a branding campaign to order new ones. EACA has placed an order to re-stock our sign inventory so that we can meet our member's sign requests.

When the signs become available we will provide the ordering instructions here in the newsletter, on Facebook, and on the EACA website. We anticipate that this will be sometime in August.

EACA will continue with the discussion about designing and considering a new brand and logo over the next year.

Code Enforcement Summit

Please join Councilmember Natalyn Archibong at the Atlanta Civic Center on August 16 at 9:00 a.m. for the City of Atlanta Code Enforcement Summit.

Archibong is co-sponsoring the event with her Council colleagues to educate citizens about the code enforcement process and how they can help to make their neighborhoods safer and more attractive.

Please submit your RSVP online and let the Council know if you have a particular issue you would like to discuss. Click here to RSVP.

East Atlanta Kids Club's Sci-Tech, Fun and Fitness Camp

The camp will feature rocketry and robotics classes, cool chemistry experiments, engaging art activities, sports (including tennis and Double Dutch jump roping) and fun field trips. Two meals are provided daily.

The camp will run weekly through July 18 (with no camp held this week). The camp costs $150 per week. Multiple session or sibling discounts of $25/week are available.

Summer 'Peace and Carrots Camps' for Children @ Local EA Farm

Oakleaf Mennonite Farm is a local nine-acre urban farm on Bouldercrest Drive in East Atlanta with acres of crop fields, chickens, goats, and sheep. We believe that kids should know where their food comes from, and our camps will teach them not only where good food comes from, but they'll also get hands-on experience.

Children will work side-by-side with farmers planting and harvesting, taking care of animals, and enjoying the work of the farm. They will also enjoy games, songs, crafts, drama and service projects that affirm their spirits and stimulate their compassion.

In our camps, we also help children work on skills of peace building - think win-win games, conflict transformation, and teamwork strategies. Campers will also be taught skills to deal with their problems in a peaceful manner and encouraged to come up with their own creative solutions to the problems they see at camp, home, school, and in the world.

We use the award-winning "Peace Train" curriculum developed by Little Friends for Peace to show kids how each step in conflict can be a chance to turn things to a different end. Local peace activists will share a story or two with the children as well.

  • July 7-11, 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
AGES: 7-12

Friday Food for Firefighters

It's always a great time to deliver a meal to our local

firefighters, and it has been a little while since they have had a visit!

Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The firefighters request food without pork. A full kitchen is available to them at the fire station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5:00 - 5:30 p.m.

Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals. You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends--one or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant at 404-455-8746 for information or with questions.
