9th Annual Georgia Rides to the Capital 3/18

The 9th annual Georgia Rides To The Capitol (GRTTC) ride is Tuesday, March 18, 2014. This great event brings over 1500 cyclists to the state capitol to show support for better bicycling in Georgia. In addition, 30 - 50 metro area mayors, elected and state officials participate as the ride is co-sponsored by our statewide advocacy group, Georgia Bikes, the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association (MAMA) and the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA).  There is no other Georgia ride that brings out this many local and state officials and it provides a great opportunity to promote cycling in our state.

There are two police escorted rides (one way) from Decatur and Roswell plus a number of auxiliary rides that connect to these rides or meet at the Capitol. Decatur is easy paced; Roswell is faster paced.

Event organizers are asking for your help in promoting the ride through your website, newsletter, Facebook page and other social media.  Past GRTTC rides have helped get Georgia's 3 foot Safe Passing bill and the GDOT's Complete Street Policy adopted - Lt. Governor Cagle has ridden with us and Governor Deal has addressed the riders at the Capitol. This event brings results!

Please consider inviting your group to join us on the ride or have them contact us for more information. Detailed event, registration and donation information is available on the website:

Images of America: East Atlanta - Book Signing @ Bound to be Read

Join Henry Bryant and Katina VanCronkhite, authors of Images of America: East Atlanta, at Bound to Be Read Books this Friday, March 21, from 7:30-9:00 p.m.

The book celebrates the history of East Atlanta and features many photographs never before published from private collections, appealing to both historical researchers and casual readers. They will be signing copies of the newly released book and sharing some of the stories they found and the challenges they encountered while researching.

Update from Friends of East Atlanta Library

The Friends of East Atlanta Library are still accepting gently-used book donations. Please drop your books off with the circulation desk at the East Atlanta Library Branch.

On Saturday, March 29 from 3:30 pm to 5:00pm at the East Atlanta Library Branch, the Friends will host a reception and book talk for local authors, Katina VanCronkhite and Henry Bryant for their new book, East Atlanta: Images of America. The authors will be sharing some of the little known history and stories of the area that they discovered during their year long research and writing process. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Thank you to our March Library Program Sponsor, the Elder Tree Public House.

East Atlanta Community Association 2014 Membership Drive

EACA Logo

The EACA 2014 membership drive is off to a great start!   Thank you to everyone who attended our first membership drive event which was in conjunction with the book launch for Images of America: East Atlanta.

There were over 15 new EACA members and a few returning members who have signed up as a result of our membership drive in just these first 2 months!

Please welcome our new and returning  members at one of our monthly meetings or during one of our next EACA sponsored events.   You can help us meet our goals by reaching out to your neighbors, friends, and colleagues; inviting them to be a part of EACA and letting them know why you value being an EACA member.   Encourage them to join us.

Join us to help make East Atlanta a vibrant neighborhood and engage with your community as a member of EACA. EACA is announcing its 2014 membership drive and you can play a part in helping us to meet our goals:

* To increase the size and diversity of EACA membership,
* To welcome 150 new members,
* To welcome back previous members still living in East Atlanta.

Our membership drive began this past Friday, March 7th when local EAV authors Henry Bryant and Katina VanCronkhite released their new book titled Images of America: East Atlanta. Thanks for everyone who came out to the event!  We will be having more throughout the year, so stay tuned!

Follow us through our newsletter or on Facebook to hear more about EACA events and our membership drive activities. Once we hit 150 new members, EACA will give away a $150 Argosy gift certificate to a lucky new member.

Why should you become a member of EACA?
* To meet your neighbors, hear what's going on, and to engage with your community.
* To take advantage of the EACA Rewards program which offers discounts from local businesses and services.
* To be involved in an organization with a mission to improve the quality of life in East Atlanta (and a 30-year track record).
* EACA volunteers do the work to improve East Atlanta; your membership gives you a say in how it happens.
* EACA contributes the resources to support initiatives that make East Atlanta a vibrant neighborhood; your membership helps to fund these activities.
* To be a part of the community "voice" with the City of Atlanta, County, and State
officials as we advocate for the neighborhood.
* Your membership makes our organization larger, providing strength in numbers as we work toward meeting our goals.

Friday Food for Firefighters

It's always a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters, and it has been a little while since they have had a visit!

Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The firefighters request food without pork.  A full kitchen is available to them at the fire station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5 - 5:30 PM.

Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals.  You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends--one or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or with questions.
