PEDS Annual Meeting Rescheduled for Mon, Feb 24

Atlanta's recent snowstorm was a great time to be a pedestrian. But since most PEDS members don't live within walking distance of Midtown, we postponed our annual meeting.

Please join us for PEDS' rescheduled annual meeting.
Monday, Feb 24, 6:00 to 7:30 PM
Close to Arts Center MARTA station

Meet and share ideas with fellow advocates, vote for board members, and enjoy great food and beverages.  Free for PEDS members; $20 for non-members includes one-year free membership for first-timers. (Cash and checks only at the door.)

Great opportunity to introduce your friends to PEDS!

Mardi Gras Party & Potluck - Mar 1st, 12-3pm

Come out on Saturday, March 1 from 12-3pm to Brownwood Park for the first annual Mardi Gras Party Pot Luck sponsored by the East Atlanta Community Association!

Cajun, zydeco and blues music will be served up by Hair of the Dog!

Due to the cold winter, the crawfish are not very big this year and they are also not very plentiful. We are changing the menu up a little and are happy to serve traditional seafood gumbo, red beans and rice, coleslaw and A DELICIOUS ROASTED PIG! Please bring compliments to this warm and hearty meal as you see fit.

Bring any side dish, dessert, chips, or drink to share and come on down to feast with your friends!

Mardi Gras Beads will be provided to all who attend!

Invite all your EAV neighbors and friends! Donations are appreciated!!

APS Announces Make Up Plan for Inclement Weather

Atlanta Public Schools (APS) has approved a comprehensive plan allowing students to make up instructional time missed due to inclement weather.  A district wide plan has been developed to increase the time and opportunity for students to receive critical instruction lost during the six days of inclement weather.

The district's professional learning day scheduled for March 17 will be a regular instructional day.  The district's original testing window for administering the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) to students in grades 3-8 will shift forward one week, with the testing beginning April 23 and ending May 1.

"We want to be a district that continues to provide our students with ample opportunities for academic success," said APS Superintendent Erroll B. Davis, Jr. "To that end, we will not only provide additional classroom learning opportunities, we will complement those efforts with blended learning instruction for all of our schools.  Our plan will include utilizing our virtual academy and our homework hotline, both of which provide after-hours assistance to students."

The remainder of the APS calendar, including spring break, the graduation schedule, and the last day of school will not change.  Spring break will remain April 7-11 and graduations are scheduled May 23-25.  The last day of school for traditional APS students remains May 23, and the last day for year-round students is May 30.

Farm Mobile - Midway Pub, Thursdays 4:30-7pm

Farm Mobile is your mobile farmers market that makes stops throughout central Atlanta every week, year round. We are at the Midway Pub, Thursday evenings 4:30-7pm.  Inside the truck, you'll find fresh locally grown produce and meats, much of it certified organic, and all of it grown by the best small family farms in our area. We also stock pantry goods created by talented artisans launching their new local food-focused businesses. Find some of Atlanta's hottest new local food here first!

Our weekly schedule includes partner locations -- area businesses and farmers markets. We park at each location for a couple of hours, and shoppers enter the truck and shop from our shelves, fridges, and freezer. We accept cash, check, credit and debit cards, and EBT.

Friday Food for Firefighters

It's always a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters, and it has been a little while since they have had a visit!

Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The firefighters request food without pork.  A full kitchen is available to them at the fire station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5 - 5:30 PM.

Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals.  You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends--one or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or with questions.
