Take the 2013 S.N.A.P. Challenge |

It's not too late to participate in the Community Farmers Markets (CFM) 2013 S.N.A.P. Challenge to raise awareness regarding access to healthy food in Atlanta and the issue of food insecurity. The challenge launched on November 10th at Grant Park Farmers Market, and will conclude on November 16th with a community potluck at the Decatur Farmers Market at 12 PM. Potluck items should be prepared on the S.N.A.P. budget with fresh foods found at the market.
Participants in the one-week challenge, which include local politicians, are living off of the allotted benefits of S.N.A.P., equaling $1.62 a meal at a grocery store, or $3.24 at CFM Farmers Markets. The challenge will also raise funds to support the CFM Double S.N.A.P. program, which doubles the benefits of S.N.A.P. recipients at the East Atlanta Village, Grant Park, and Decatur Farmers Markets.
There are more than 1.9 million Georgians who receive S.N.A.P. benefits, according to the U.S.D.A. Food and Nutrition Services. By partnering with Wholesome Wave Georgia, CFM is able to increase the access families and individuals receiving S.N.A.P have to healthy, local and sustainably grown food by doubling S.N.A.P. benefits at the markets. Through the operation of local farmers markets, CFM not only empowers access to quality food in Atlanta but also supports the local food economy.

East Atlanta Santa Fest coming up December 7-8 |
The East Atlanta Santa Fest celebrates its 7th year of holiday events throughout the East Atlanta Village on December 7th and 8th, and this year promises to be the biggest one yet. Events include a tree decorating contest, artist market (more info below), parade, ornament making, caroling, horse drawn sleigh rides through the village, pictures with Santa, and of course the official lighting of the big EAV Tree with that jolly old elf riding in on his 1964 canary yellow Ford F100 sleigh.
Most events are free except for photos with Santa because the proceeds benefit Neighbor in Need and the East Atlanta Kids club. Pictures with Santa cost $15 for a set of pictures on a flash drive. Make reservations by emailing EAVSanta@gmail.com. Reservations are in 10-minute increments both Saturday and Sunday. Those who get their picture on Sunday will also get a coupon from Urban Cannibals for a free kid's meal of Grilled Cheese, chips/fruit and a drink with the purchase of an adult brunch item that is good until 12/15/2013. In previous years, Santa also has had plenty of time to see walk-in visitors around the appointments. This year there is a diverse collection of Santas. If you have had photos made in previous years and would like to know which shift "your" Santa will be available, e-mail the elves.
The tree decorating contest is a fun way for a group or business to help make East Atlanta Village look festive. There is no entry fee. Reserve a tree by e-mailing EAVSanta@gmail.com. Bring your ladder, decorations, decorators and outdoor-certified lights on Saturday, December 7. Paraders and those attending the tree lighting will vote on their favorite tree, with trophies awarded for first, second and third place. The defending champs, The Village Church, has been working on their plan for months now.
The East Atlanta Santa parade will be led by Rudolph and the Maynard Jackson Marching band. Meet near the Midway at 5 PM. The parade will go up the east side of Flat Shoals to Metropolitan, cross the street and head south past the decorated Village trees on the west side of Flat Shoals, allowing paraders to vote for their favorite tree as they parade by. The parade will finish at the EACA tree in time for the lighting.
EACA and the East Atlanta Farmers Market are partnering to host 3 holiday EAV Craft Markets in December. Vendors can sign up to participate for $40 per market, or $100 for all 3: Saturday Dec. 7 - 12 to 5 PM (11 AM setup), in conjunction with East Atlanta Santa, tree lighting, and more Thursday Dec. 12 - 4 to 8 PM (3 PM setup) Thursday Dec. 19 - 4 to 8 PM (3 PM setup) |

New Unincorporated DeKalb Security Patrol
|
The East Atlanta Community Association, in conjunction with the East Atlanta Security Patrol, is planning to start a Security Patrol for the adjoining areas of unincorporated Dekalb County. Here is a link to the proposed boundaries of the new patrol. These boundaries are not finalized. We need the community's feedback on whether you would be willing to support such an effort. Please respond to dekalb360@gmail.com or 209-878-7360 with your address and contact information if your household would support such a patrol based on the cost and general parameters outlined below. If we don't receive sufficient interest from an area, we could redraw the map to exclude your area. If we receive interest from areas not currently on the map, we could redraw the map to include your area. Be sure to tell your neighbors and friends to contact us as well in order to guarantee that your street or neighborhood is included on the final patrol map.
- Proposed start date of January 1, 2014, with enrollment starting on Dec. 1st
- Off-duty Dekalb County officers will staff the patrol
- Officers will be electronically monitored to ensure patrols are effective
- Hours of patrols will be based on community need
- Patrol frequency in each area will be based on paid members in that area
- Members will be able to submit requests for extra patrols when they're out of town
- All members of the community will have full access to the patrol phone and email
- Proposed cost for membership is $200 per year, $50 per year for senior citizens
- Information will be shared continuously with DKPD, APD and the East Atlanta Security Patrol
- Meeting at South Precinct in first week of December to answer community questions

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update |
The East Atlanta Security Patrol ("EASP") is an effort to enhance safety in East Atlanta. Specifically, off-duty Zone Six Police Officers will be hired to perform additional patrols within Beat 612, which is the police designation for the East Atlanta community, beyond those presently being performed by the police. The amount of time that the officers shall patrol will be determined by the level of support from the community in terms of membership. Since more members mean more patrol hours, we encourage you to share this information with your neighbors and East Atlanta business owners. Both residents and businesses must be within the City of Atlanta to become a member. Donations to the EASP may be made by anyone.
In addition to the general benefit of having additional police patrols at the time they are most needed, members shall receive the following services as part of their membership:
- Immediate Access to Security Patrol Service
- Call, text or e-mail anytime with immediate or ongoing public safety concerns
- Enhanced Police Patrol Services
- Officers will check member locations as often as practicable
- Out of Town Check for Residential Members
- Officers will visit the member household and if possible perform an inspection on foot
- Indicia of Membership
- All members will receive an EASP yard sign
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP website. There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.
