2013 Neighborhood Ambassador Training Class |

What is a Neighborhood Ambassador?
Neighborhood ambassadors are community members who work together with DeKalb County Code Compliance to maintain high standards in their neighborhoods such as reporting the following violations:
- Illegal signs located within the county right-of-way
- Vehicles parked on unpaved surfaces
- Open storage of trash and debris on exterior ground of properties
- Lack of property maintenance or landscaping
- and much more
- Why Should You Become a Neighborhood Ambassador?
Code Compliance ensures that the public observes county codes and ordinances. These codes regulate matters related to public safety, zoning matters, public commerce, city cleanliness, public advertisements and displays, vehicular issues and environmental matters. Code Compliance is intended to ensure the acceptable quality of living environments in neighborhoods and communities is maintained.

East Atlanta Residents Launch Dog Festival
|
East Atlanta residents and business owners have joined forces to launch a fall festival on October 20th that celebrates dogs, while raising money for local pet charities. Dogtoberfest in EAV 2013 will feature a dog costume contest, food, music, and a parade of adoptable dogs. All proceeds from the event will benefit Southern Animal Rescue and Lifeline Animal Project.
Pet owners can check out dog yoga along with educational resources such as an "Ask the Trainer" booth as well as adoptable pets from local rescues. Dogtoberfest also will provide tools to help prospective dog owners find a four-legged companion that complements their lifestyle. Family-friendly vendors and activities will be on site from 12-4 PM at 561 Flat Shoals Avenue, the space typically occupied by the EAV Farmers Market. Big Daddy Biscuits will serve as signature sponsor for the event.
"Our goal is to promote responsible pet ownership while paying it forward for pets," said Morieka Johnson, editor of SoulPup.com, a website for new dog owners. "Lifeline and Southern Animal Rescue have a rich history of helping pets in need and we are happy to support their hard work in the community."
For more information, visit the event's Facebook page, Dogtoberfest in EAV 2013.

Atlanta Public Schools' Toomer K-8 Meeting
During the redistricting process of 2011-2012 the topic of potentially turning elementary schools serving Jackson High into Kindergarten through 8th grade was not met with a favorable reaction from the APS Superintendent, Erroll Davis. However, this past summer this idea was put back on the APS Board agenda with Toomer as the possible location.
APS has created two opportunities to discuss this possibilty. These meetings will be open to parents and community members of Coan Middle School and its feeder elementary schools, which BPA is one, to discuss the possible transition of Toomer Elemenatary School into a K-8 facility. If you have questions or concerns about this possible transition and how it would affect East Atlanta please plan on attending.
- Why is APS now considering this change?
- Why make such a dramatic change so soon after redistricting?
- Would this decision mean the closing of Coan Middle School?
- What is APS's vision for our cluster?
- How will the communities of Coan cluster be included in the decisions?
- Who will pay for this?
- How will this affect your decision for your child's middle school?

In order to allow the BPA community to attend this very important meeting on October 22nd, we are rescheduling the October PTA meeting for October 15th which will include a discussion about our need to be involved in this meeting, the acceptance of questions to assist in our approach on October 22nd and the importance of how this affects the entire Jackson cluster.
If you have any questions please email Lewis Cartee, Burgess-Peterson Academy Local School Council Chair and EACA Education Chair.
Mulch Madness Thank You!
The Burgess-Peterson Academy PTA expresses their sincere gratitude for all of the support from the BPA family as well as the greater East Atlanta Community. We had a wonderful, tiring and dirty day this past Saturday installing wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow to help make the playground a safer place to play.
