BPA Mulch Madness...Part II: The Spreading

BPA

The Burgess-Peterson Academy PTA is pleased to announce that due to the support of the community we reached our goal for Mulch Madness.  We would like to express our sincere gratitude for everyone that contributed to the fund.

Now for the next phase: Please come join us on October 5th from 9 AM to 1 PM as we install our mountain of mulch in the playground and work off your Taste of East Atlanta calories in advance. We will have some appropriate tools, but additional shovels, rakes, gloves and especially wheelbarrows will be useful and very much appreciated.

If you can help or have questions, please email

14th Annual Trees Atlanta Tree Sale and Festival

Ah, the rituals of fall. The return of yellow school buses. The changing colors of the leaves. The first frost. Football. And, of course, the 14th annual Trees Atlanta Tree Sale!

Back for its 14th year, the annual Trees Atlanta Tree Sale promises to be bigger and better than ever! Approximately 200 species of trees, plants, and tree-friendly vines will be sold, and there is something for every tree lover. Get amazing deals on native and exotic trees for yards and businesses.  The tree sale is also an opportunity to meet the sheep that Trees Atlanta has hired to eat invasive plants in Atlanta's greenspaces!

Free to attend, the tree sale takes place October 12th, 2013 from 8 AM to 2 PM at the Trees Atlanta Kendeda Center, located at 225 Chester Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30316. It is one of the highlights of the year for Trees Atlanta, so mark your calendar now!

East Atlanta Residents Launch Dog Festival

East Atlanta residents and business owners have joined forces to launch a fall festival on October 20th that celebrates dogs, while raising money for local pet charities. Dogtoberfest in EAV 2013 will feature a dog costume contest, food, music, and a parade of adoptable dogs. All proceeds from the event will benefit Southern Animal Rescue and Lifeline Animal Project.

Pet owners can check out dog yoga along with educational resources such as an "Ask the Trainer" booth as well as adoptable pets from local rescues. Dogtoberfest also will provide tools to help prospective dog owners find a four-legged companion that complements their lifestyle. Family-friendly vendors and activities will be on site from 12-4 PM at 561 Flat Shoals Avenue, the space typically occupied by the EAV Farmers Market.  Big Daddy Biscuits will serve as signature sponsor for the event.

"Our goal is to promote responsible pet ownership while paying it forward for pets," said Morieka Johnson, editor of SoulPup.com, a website for new dog owners. "Lifeline and Southern Animal Rescue have a rich history of helping pets in need and we are happy to support their hard work in the community."

For more information, visit the event's Facebook page, Dogtoberfest in EAV 2013.

Neighbor in Need Annual Pumpkin Sale
The East Atlanta Community Association's Neighbor in Need Initiative will be doing its annual pumpkin sale at the East Atlanta Farmer's Market each Thursday, 10/3 through 10/31.  Pumpkins of all sizes are available and all proceeds benefit local residents who are helped by Neighbor in Need.  We have small pumpkins great for cooking and large pumpkins for carving, ranging in cost from $5 to $20, depending on size.

Stop by the Farmer's Market to grab the best pumpkins early and chat with the Neighbor in Need members to see what we do and how you can help!
Pumpkin Patch for Native American and Local Missions
Love Halloween?  Or pumpkin pie?  Gourds and Indian corn on your door?

You can get it all and have a good time, too, at Oakleaf Mennonite Farm just down the road at 1088 Bouldercrest Drive through October 31st.  The Patch will be open 12-1 PM and 5-9 PM each weekday and 10 AM to 9 PM each Saturday and Sunday.  Cash only.

The pumpkin patch will feature a tractor trailer load of beautiful pumpkins and other cool items from the Navajo Reservation in Farmington, NM.  Proceeds will benefit both the Navajjo Agricultural Products Industry (NAPI) and our local teaching ministries.

Bring the kids for photo opportunities and for a chance to meet the chickens, goats and sheep (and hopefully the newborn lambs!) as well. For more information, please call 404-244-0289.
Fall is here at the East Atlanta Village Farmers Market
As the seasons are changing, so is the produce at the East Atlanta Village Farmers Market.  Come out on Thursdays, 4-8 PM and enjoy the last fruits of summer and the start of new fall vegetables.  The market will run through December 12th, so don't wait to come out and enjoy the farmers, vendors, chef's station, music, and more!

Atlanta Public School Board Candidate Forum

On October 14th at 6 PM, please join Southeast Atlanta Communities for Schools (SEACS) and Council of Intown Neighborhoods and Schools (CINS) as they host the Atlanta Public School Board Candidate Forum for Jackson and Grady Clusters at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, 545 Hill St. SE, Atlanta, GA 30312.

Expected in attendance will be candidates for Districts 1, 2, 3, 7 (at-large), 8 (at-large) and 9 (at-large).

Update from Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School (ANCS)

The 2013-14 school year finds the Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School (ANCS) now into its second decade of serving students from across southeast Atlanta and the rest of the city.  ANCS is a multi-campus, K-8 public charter school with over 650 students for the current school year.  Demographically, 39% of ANCS students are students of color, 14% of students receive special education services through an IEP, and the school's middle school campus is designated as a Title I school based on the percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced price meals.

Despite significant reductions in local and state funding last school year, ANCS continued to demonstrate innovation and excellence in teaching and learning including:

  • ANCS students performed at higher levels than APS and Georgia averages on the Reading, ELA, and Math CRCTs in grades 3-5 and 6-8
  • ANCS students performed at higher levels than APS and Georgia averages on the 5th and 8th grade writing test for the third consecutive year
  • The New Teacher Residency Project--a collaboration between ANCS and Georgia State University to support new teachers in their first years in the classroom--launched with the support of a nearly $1 million "Innovation Fund" grant from the state
  • ANCS teachers were invited to present at national conferences and an ANCS teacher was one of five educators in the United States to receive an award for excellence in culturally-responsive teaching

If you do not have a student at ANCS but would like to get a sense of the school, we welcome you to attend our Fall Festival on Saturday, October 19th from 12-3 PM at our elementary campus in Grant Park at 688 Grant Street.

Burgess-Peterson Academy: Letter from Principal Robbins

BPA

September 20, 2013

Dear East Atlanta Community and Stakeholders,

I would like to take the opportunity to extend and communicate my gratitude for your unwavering support of your local public school. It seems as if only yesterday that I began my journey serving as the principal of Burgess-Peterson Academy. As I enter into my SIXTH year of serving the wonderful students, parents, and community of such a wonderful part of the city, I would like to communicate all of the wonderful and outstanding accomplishments of the BPA team!  Before I provide you with some remarkable academic performance statistics, I would like to tell you what I am most proud of! Burgess-Peterson Academy has received unprecedented support from parents and community stakeholders in such a variety of ways. One of the most challenging aspects of my job six years ago was by far engaging the community in our school. Now as we turn the clocks forward, BPA is an integral aspect of the East Atlanta community and truly models the cliché, "the school cannot live apart from the community".

Use your ideas and enthusiasm on the FEAL board

Each October FEAL looks for a few individuals with ideas and enthusiasm to join our board and help plan, promote, and preserve the future of the East Atlanta Library in the community. As one of the busiest neighborhood libraries in Atlanta and with one of the fastest growing children's programs, FEAL would like to add five to eight new board members this year to help keep pace with its growth and community impact. All we ask is that board members bring their ideas and talents to help promote and raise additional funding for the library and attend five board meetings each year, usually on Monday evenings.

If you are interested, or know someone who is, please let FEAL know at friendsofeal@gmail.com.

Friday Food for Firefighters

Fall is upon us and it's a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters!  Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The firefighters request food without pork.  A full kitchen is available to them at the fire station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5 - 5:30 PM.

Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals.  You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends--one or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or with questions.
