Pumpkin Patch for Native American and Local Missions |
Love Halloween? Or pumpkin pie? Gourds and Indian corn on your door? You can get it all and have a good time, too, at Oakleaf Mennonite Farm just down the road at 1088 Bouldercrest Drive from Saturday, September 28th through October 31st. The Patch will be open from Noon to 1 PM and from 5 PM to 9 PM each weekday and from 10 AM to 9 PM each Saturday and Sunday. Cash only. The pumpkin patch will feature a tractor trailer load of beautiful pumpkins and other cool items from the Navajo Reservation in Farmington, NM. Proceeds will benefit both the Navajjo Agricultural Products Industry (NAPI) and our local teaching ministries. Bring the kids for photo opportunities and for a chance to meet the chickens, goats and sheep (and hopefully the newborn lambs!) as well. |

14th Annual Trees Atlanta Tree Sale and Festival |
Ah, the rituals of fall. The return of yellow school buses. The changing colors of the leaves. The first frost. Football. And, of course, the 14th annual Trees Atlanta Tree Sale!
Back for its 14th year, the annual Trees Atlanta Tree Sale promises to be bigger and better than ever! Approximately 200 species of trees, plants, and tree-friendly vines will be sold, and there is something for every tree lover. Get amazing deals on native and exotic trees for yards and businesses. The tree sale is also an opportunity to meet the sheep that Trees Atlanta has hired to eat invasive plants in Atlanta's greenspaces!
Free to attend, the tree sale takes place October 12th, 2013 from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Trees Atlanta Kendeda Center, located at 225 Chester Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30316. It is one of the highlights of the year for Trees Atlanta, so mark your calendar now! |
East Atlanta Residents Launch Dog Festival |
East Atlanta residents and business owners have joined forces to launch a fall festival that celebrates dogs, while raising money for local pet charities. Dogtoberfest in EAV 2013 will feature a dog costume contest, food, music and a parade of adoptable dogs. All proceeds from the Oct. 20 event will benefit Southern Animal Rescue and Lifeline Animal Project. Residents Lauren Janis, Morieka Johnson and Mary Yetter brainstormed the idea for Dogtoberfest over dinner in East Atlanta, then recruited friends and local business owners to help turn the idea into reality.
"East Atlanta Village is such a pet-friendly community, and we wanted to create a fun event that promotes education and rescue organizations that support our community," said Janis, whose company Big Daddy Biscuits will serve as signature sponsor for the event. "I am so proud to launch Dogtoberfest. We plan to make it an EAV tradition for years to come."
Pet owners can check out dog yoga along with educational resources such as an "Ask the Trainer" booth as well as adoptable pets from local rescues. Dogtoberfest also will provide tools to help prospective dog owners find a four-legged companion that complements their lifestyle. Family-friendly vendors and activities will be on site from noon until 4 p.m. at 561 Flat Shoals Avenue, space typically occupied by the EAV farmers market.
"Our goal is to promote responsible pet ownership while paying it forward for pets," said Johnson, editor of SoulPup.com, a website for new dog owners. "Lifeline and Southern Animal Rescue have a rich history of helping pets in need and we are happy to support their hard work in the community."
For more information, visit the event's Facebook page, Dogtoberfest in EAV 2013. |
Mulch Madness at Burgess-Peterson Academy |

What's just as important to our children as learning? Taking a short break to get some exercise, sunshine and have a chance to let the lessons sink in. Burgess-Peterson is lucky enough to have a playground, but the students are in danger of losing their chance to use it.
Why? One word: Mulch. We need a lot of it. We need a type that's approved by the school district, and it's not cheap, so we need your help. The goal is $2,500 in 30 days. We'll also need help hauling the mountain of mulch into the playground on a date to be determined.
If you might be able to help, please email mulchmadness@burgesspeterson.com or drop your contact info in the PTA mailbox in the school office. Cash donations may be dropped in the PTA box in the front office or donate via the Burgess-Peterson PTA Square Market store. Please forward this notice to friends and family who would like to help our cause. Donors will be recognized on a bulletin board at school.
Donation levels:
Teacher's pet: $100
Merry-go-round: $75
Monkey bars: $50
Slide: $25
Teeter-totter: $10
Swing: $5
If we exceed the fundraising goal, the extra dollars will go toward other playground-related improvements. Thank you for your support of the PTA and our students at Burgess-Peterson Academy!

Use your ideas and enthusiasm on the FEAL board |
Each October FEAL looks for a few individuals with ideas and enthusiasm to join our board and help plan, promote, and preserve the future of the East Atlanta Library in the community. As one of the busiest neighborhood libraries in Atlanta and with one of the fastest growing children's programs, FEAL would like to add five to eight new board members this year to help keep pace with its growth and community impact. All we ask is that board members bring their ideas and talents to help promote and raise additional funding for the library and attend five board meetings each year, usually on Monday evenings.
If you are interested, or know someone who is, please let FEAL know at friendsofeal@gmail.com.

Friday Food for Firefighters
|
Summer is waning and it's a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters! Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The firefighters request food without pork. A full kitchen is available to them at the fire station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5 - 5:30 PM.
Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals. You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends--one or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.
Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or with questions.

DeKalb County Animal Services |
The DeKalb County shelter has experienced an extremely high intake of animals this past couple of months and in an effort to get the dogs and cats adopted, the shelter is having a "Tail End of Summer" adoption promotion for the rest of September. Dog adoptions are only $20 and cat adoptions are only $10 including the spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinations, etc (well over a $200 retail value).
Photos of pets for adoption, as well as more information about the DeKalb County Animal Services, is available at: www.dekalbanimalservices.com
DeKalb County and the shelter are also overwhemed with an extremely high number of pit bulls and pit bull mixes so a new program has been created in the hopes helping the problem. It is called the "Free Pit Fix" and it provides free spay/neuters and vaccinations (rabies and distemper/parvo) for pit bulls and pit bulls mixes that reside in DeKalb county. DeKalb residents just need to print, fill out and mail or fax in the form located here.
Once the form is received, a voucher for a free spay/neuter and shots is mailed to the pet owners. |
East Atlanta Security Patrol Update |

Our 60 in 60 promotion is in full swing, with a goal of signing up 60 new members in 60 days. All new memberships of six months or longer will receive the months of August and September for free.
