September Brownwood Frolic - Watch the Falcons!
Are you ready for some football!?!  Come join your neighbors in Brownwood Park on September 15th as we kick-off Strut week while kicking off with the Falcons in our September installment of the Brownwood Frolic.  We will be firing up the grill so bring your own protein.  EACA will provide the rest, including ice cold beverages.

Mulch Madness at Burgess-Peterson Academy
BPA

What's just as important to our children as learning?  Taking a short break to get some exercise, sunshine and have a chance to let the lessons sink in.  Burgess-Peterson is lucky enough to have a playground, but the students are in danger of losing their chance to use it.

Why? One word: Mulch.  We need a lot of it. We need a type that's approved by the school district, and it's not cheap, so we need your help. The goal is $2,500 in 30 days.  We'll also need help hauling the mountain of mulch into the playground on a date to be determined.

If you might be able to help, please email [email protected] or drop your contact info in the PTA mailbox in the school office.  Cash donations may be dropped in the PTA box in the front office or donate via the Burgess-Peterson PTA Square Market store.  Please forward this notice to friends and family who would like to help our cause.  Donors will be recognized on a bulletin board at school.

Donation levels:

Teacher's pet: $100

Merry-go-round: $75

Monkey bars: $50

Slide: $25

Teeter-totter: $10

Swing: $5

If we exceed the fundraising goal, the extra dollars will go toward other playground-related improvements.  Thank you for your support of the PTA and our students at Burgess-Peterson Academy!

Keep DeKalb Beautiful benefit night at Twain's - September 9th

Keep DeKalb Beautiful will host a benefit night and give citizens the opportunity to support our efforts and celebrate our achievements. Come out to Twain's ready to eat, drink, and play games! There is no cover charge and 10% of proceeds from the evening will be donated to Keep DeKalb Beautiful.

Note that Twain's is 21+ after 9 PM, but families are welcome before 9.

How will you STRUT your stuff?

It's time to decide how you'll represent the neighborhood in the East Atlanta Strut Parade coming up on Saturday, September 21st! Decorate your bicycle, car, truck or stroller -- or just decorate yourself and put on your strutting shoes. Whether you want to have fun or want to spread the word about your group or business in a unique way, the Strut Parade is the way to go.

Strutting with a group is also a great way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or other milestone. Register here.

Friends of East Atlanta Library needs help with their annual book sale!

FEAL is busy preparing for our biggest fundraiser -- the annual book sale during the East Atlanta Strut.  Not only do we need your book donations, we need your help sorting and taking a shift at the book sale. It's both fun and helps raise the money we need to keep our books and programming top notch.

Thanks to all who have already donated books. We have received some great selections. We will continue to accept gently read and mold-free hardback and paperback books, audiobooks and CDs through September 13th. You may leave your book donations at the EAL circulation desk.

The books have been pouring in for our annual book sale on September 21 during the EAV Strut and we are anticipating the best-ever book sale and fundraiser to date. FEAL members have been busy sorting the donations so that they're easier for customers to locate. Next week there are three remaining opportunities to help sort in the EAL Meeting Room if you would like to lend a hand: Monday from 6-8 pm; Wednesday from 1-3 pm; and Friday 3-5 pm. You can still donate books for this book sale through Friday.

This year, FEAL is excited to have the book sale located in the commercial space behind Thai and Sushi on Flat Shoals Avenue and protected in case of rain. We can still use some extra hands the day of the sale if you would like to volunteer for one of our 2-hour shifts. Shifts are from 8-10; 10-noon; 12-2; 2-4; and 4-6. If interested, please email FEAL at [email protected].

 DeKalb County Animal Services
The DeKalb County shelter has experienced an extremely high intake of animals this past couple of months and in an effort to get the dogs and cats adopted, the shelter is having a "Tail End of Summer" adoption promotion for the rest of September.  Dog adoptions are only $20 and cat adoptions are only $10 including the spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinations, etc (well over a $200 retail value).

Photos of pets for adoption, as well as more information about the DeKalb County Animal Services, is available at: www.dekalbanimalservices.com

DeKalb County and the shelter are also overwhemed with an extremely high number of pit bulls and pit bull mixes so a new program has been created in the hopes helping the problem.  It is called the "Free Pit Fix" and it provides free spay/neuters and vaccinations (rabies and distemper/parvo) for pit bulls and pit bulls mixes that reside in DeKalb county. DeKalb residents just need to print, fill out and mail or fax in the form located here.

Once the form is received, a voucher for a free spay/neuter and shots is mailed to the pet owners.
Friday Food for Firefighters

Summer is waning and it's a great time to deliver a meal to our local firefighters!  Providing a meal means having a cooked meal to hand over to the firefighters at Station 13 on Friday evening. The firefighters request food without pork.  A full kitchen is available to them at the fire station and they can heat something as needed. Meals should be delivered between 5 - 5:30 PM.

Sign up here (password is "friday") to see what dates are available for meals.  You might think about sharing different parts of a meal with friends--one or two people might provide the main meal, another could provide bread or a side dish or dessert.

Please call Beth-Ann Buitekant (404-455-8746) for information or with questions.

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update

EASP

Our 60 in 60 promotion is in full swing, with a goal of signing up 60 new members in 60 days.  All new memberships of six months or longer will receive the months of August and September for free.  In addition, the Village Church of East Atlanta has offered to match new memberships during August and September dollar for dollar up to $7,000.  While new residential memberships will still fund residential patrols, the matching funds will go toward patrols of the East Atlanta Village and surrounding streets.  Our primary goal of the new Village patrols is to increase pedestrian safety, but we also expect to see reductions in auto thefts and vehicle break-ins.
